What do y'all think... Are we being proactive enough in this country?

After seeing China quarantine millions of their residents, it seems like a joke that the US is basically just telling its citizens to "wash your hands often."

I guess they've got to maintain a delicate balance to prevent the public from breaking down into hysteria, but holy shyt will someone tell me if there's more active steps being taken to curb the spread?

This is what it must've been like to hear the plague has touch down in London. Instead of people worrying, everyone is just sort of continuing on with their day and hoping for the best.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We are not doing enough here. China actually has a good formula. Ie. Locking people down. That’s much harder to pull off in a country like the United States though, and we seem to be seeing the federal government downplaying things.

Washing hands sounds simple but it’s actually a great strategy. Again I will reference my friend that is a specialist in pandemics at the CDC. He said that this virus is particularly vulnerable to regular soap because of something on the surface involving lipids. I couldn’t follow him explaining the science behind it, but he basically said that regular soap and water is much more effective then hand sanitizer for the virus.

But he also said most people wash their hands in effectively, and he said that you should really try to get between all of the folds of skin especially in the webs of your hands and the creases in the middle of your hands, as well as underneath your fingernails and on your fingertips, ending with finally your wrists. He said you should sing happy birthday twice while washing and that’s long enough.

He said that and trying your best to touch your face as little as possible will go a very long ways, and disinfecting your phone with wipes every time you get back home from work or running errands.

Overall though he said we are definitely not doing enough. He did tell me this afternoon that the death toll is surprisingly lower than he thought it would be right now. Which is really good.

So I'll share my experience, lived in China for a long time until just recently, set up camp in Taiwan. So before the Chinese New Year WeChat, the god damn lifeline of China was lighting up something is going around. I paid no attention because why would I wasn't in China right then, come around to Chinese New Year full-blown panic literally two weeks later. My boys were here from China to chop it up about business. Asked them about it said they heard but didn't think was a big thing it will be under control. Again a week later China is shutting everything down.

Think the Monday before they left they were the last flights allowed to flights to China. After that, all flights in and out were not allowed basically shut down. That week everything sold out. No toilet paper, no mask, no hand sanitizer, no alcohol above 50%. A lot of vegetables. All gone! Pure chaos! The government put in ration programs for the mask, go to the pharmacy and are allowed two a day depending on your name alternate between days.

Next weeks later all schools shut down for a few weeks.

I have a business in the port city of the country, they quarantined the whole freaking city as soon as the news broke that the cruise ship touched port. Shut it down for 2.5 weeks, was livid at the time but it seemed to work. No new cases for like 2.5 weeks now. This was all at the beginning of February.

People coming in from affected countries also, 14-day quarantining before you can touch soil automatically. They put huge ass fines for anyone breaking quarantine! Believe 5 people have been hit with heavy fines. Some guy was told to stay put, went to the club they hit with such a huge fine it set the standard for everyone else. So that made people stay put.

So yeah not enough, my boys in China said the same thing China locked down everything all over but its China they can do that and they were tracking people movements from cell towers on WeChat to make sure they stay in the quarantine area. But again that's China.

So yeah draconian methods work well!

Edit: more cases this morning but the measures are still working.
