Highlighting COVID-19 racial disparities can reduce support for safety precautions among White U.S. residents - ScienceDirect
Study 1 provided initial support for our preregistered hypotheses. We found that White U.S. residents who perceived there to be greater racial disparities in COVID-19 were less fearful of COVID-19. In addition, an exploratory mediation analysis indicated that this reduced fear of COVID-19 may decrease support for safety precautions. Thus, these findings suggest that publicizing racial disparities in COVID-19 could possibly lead the public to be less supportive of safety measures that could limit the spread of COVID-19.
