Religious use of masking don't do shyt, Japan is having all time highs in cases rn. As far as stateside, states w/ mask mandates(NY, CA) had all time highs in cases recently.
Regarding lockdowns:
Lockdowns reduce transmission.
Mortality is a percentage of deceased compared to cases.
So the percentage should remain roughly the same, but the absolute numbers are lower due to lower transmission.
Japan managed Delta wave quickly with good ventilation and CO2 monitoring and vaccines, and for Delta this was enough despite the prevalence of surgical masks, for which they seem to have a long tradition:

Now they just seem to need mask upgrade for Omicron from chirurgical into their DS2 or RS2 masks, and they will be much better placed on Swiss cheese strategy than most of other countries...
(Just scrap hand hygiene and face touching for covid, these seem less important since the surface contagion appears to be very rare, although these are very important for other diseases).
