I know the media is jumping on omicron being less severe and they have also given a somewhat scientific reasoning for it (it effects the upper respiratory tract moreso than Delta and not so much the lung sacs/alveoli)

But I still want to see more data.

Alpha operated on a population that had no immunity.

Delta hit a population that had some immunity (vaxed and previous infection)

Omicron is going up against people who have some immunity as well as people that have boosters.

I'm hoping these journalists can put things into perspective by comparing like to like, ie compare the unvaccinated alpha cases to unvaccinated omicron cases, vaccinated alpha vs vaccinated omicron cases, vaccinated alpha vs boostered omicron, and so on when it comes to age.

Speaking of age, I think they are doing some heavy lifting looking at the south African cases when you consider that the average age in south Africa is 27 years old which is crazy in its own right and probably deserves its own health related discussion (I think only 5% of it's population is older than 65).

Upper respiratory tract is still Bronchitis and Pneumonia if shyt gets bad. Either way, take no chances.

Thanks for that knowledge.

I never knew both diseases was defined in that way

:ehh:

But yeah I'm chilling for the time being. Been isolating for a week and a half so far since I would like to see my folks this Xmas. And of course vaxed and masked up if I have to get some groceries or something.

They are mentioning it now but only after a couple weeks of nonstop fear mongering - even though South African doctors were saying from the beginning that severity was much lower.

I'm glad biden administration is finally being open about the fact that at this point it's really just a matter of choice. You can either protect yourself through widely available vaccines/boosters, or you can roll the dice.

No different to me than the choices people make every day regarding drinking/drugs/reckless driving or any other potentially dangerous activity. People make these decisions every day.

As a country we need to continue using sticks/carrots to push people to vaccinate, get boosters etc. Insurance companies need to be even tougher on people who willingly avoid vaccines then clog up the hospital system. It doesn't even have to be so drastic as to deny all coverage. They could just add a $1,500 surcharge and I guarantee you a lot of mfers would be lined up to get vaccinated. People who are already vaccinated should be pushed, prodded, bribed to get boosters. We should also be manufacturing vaccines 24 hours a day and shipping them to less developed nations.

But this back and forth of lockdowns, partial loosening of restrictions, lockdowns, opening/closing schools and constantly changing rules for businesses etc is just not healthy for society. People desire some sense of stability. Covid has been around long enough now that people understand how to mitigate risks and understand the inevitability of breakthrough cases.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/12/22/south-africa-omicron-coronavirus-cases/

NAIROBI — South Africa’s huge wave of omicron cases appears to be subsiding just as quickly as it grew in the weeks after the country first announced to the world that a new coronavirus variant had been identified.
South Africa’s top infectious-disease scientist, who has been leading the country’s pandemic response, said Wednesday that the country had rapidly passed the peak of new omicron cases and, judging by preliminary evidence, he expected “every other country, or almost every other, to follow the same trajectory.”
“If previous variants caused waves shaped like Kilimanjaro, omicron’s is more like we were scaling the North Face of Everest,” Salim Abdool Karim said in an interview, referring to the near-vertical increase in infections that South Africa recorded in the first weeks of December.
“Now we’re going down, right back down, the South Face — and that is the way we think it may work with a variant like omicron, and perhaps even more broadly what we’ll see with subsequent variants at this stage of the pandemic,” he said.

Fingers crossed

If I hadn't taken the proper precautions(getting in the best shape of my life, daily vitamin intake, triple vaxxed) this virus would be kicking my ass right now. As it stands I still only have that mildly sore throat that comes and goes. Other than that I feel normal

My only worry, and why I feel bad is that I would have never known I had this thing if I hadn't had to take a covid test for something work related. Just have to hope I didn't spread it

@barese had made a point about their ventilation recently I think?
What are Japan doing that the West is not ? Are they doing different than extracting stale air in the wet rooms and having fresh air intakes from bedrooms/living rooms ?

They're doing this radical thing in Japan with wearing masks and cooperating with getting vaccines. Us westerners do not believe in such witch craft

I'm being sarcastic but still...

Not sure tbh. I think their scientists were some of the first to posit that good ventilation retarded the spread of the virus, but I don't know if it's implemented guidelines, of if their building have such ventilation already.
