Look Martin Luther King was a civil rights legend but Obama has every right to swear in upon his Bible, this could very well be the last time we see an African American president in our lifetimes, and we go so far out of our way to marginalize. Again like I said the last time Cornell West criticized Obama, few people have a problem with him criticizing him, but West timing is god awful, sometimes when you appoint yourself as part of the Black elite, knowing when to be silent is far more valuable than knowing when to speak.

It's MLK day today right?
:manny:

West was spot on however using the bible doesn't taint shyt. Obama or not (it could have been Bush), I think it was used because it is MLK day today.

:manny: West is almost starting to sound more Al Sharpton to me day in and day out. Which is a sad thing because i really respect the guy, and his points are usually on point, even these, but really "tainting MLK" because they used the MLK bible on MLK day?

If they hadn't used the bible i'm almost willing to be he'd be up there saying he tainted the legacy of MLK by NOT using it.

No argument that MLK would be up in arms about what goes on today, however; the bible being used as cover to make the point is just silly to me.

He's not "tainting MLK." He's making an unjustified attempt to connect his own activity to the Civil Rights struggle, which is offensive on some level to anyone who pays attention to that history. It's not just the use of MLK's Bible. In his speech, he specifically said he was going to "carry on" the work of MLK and the Civil Rights leaders, among other strained attempts to link himself to them. It's obvious that all these references to MLK were chosen for political reasons. I'm sorry, but this is not only political theater, it's simply unjustified. If Obama had taken steps to actually earn such rhetoric, things would be different.

He has appoint though...it's kind of hypocritical for a drone bombing, corporate loving president to use the bible of a man who fought and died speaking against economic/social inequality, poverty and the unjust killing of innocents in the name of military action to be sworn into an office where said politician plans to continue bombing with little regard for collateral damage and circle jerking the corporate elite while doing as little as possible for the needy in this country.

i see what's going on, and yes it's political theater...all politics is now.

Just sayign it's MLK day today, perhaps that has something to do with the throw back and attempted linkage to MLK.

...yes either way it's theater and no problem in calling it out...just something don't sit right with me and the way west is constantly coming at Obama.

One doesn't have to agree or emulate all of DR. Kings qualities, in order to respect and honor his legacy. Dr King didn't fight for us to find stuff to fight about. He fought to give us opportunities to be equal. In my opinion the people bringing up this non issue are disrespecting his legacy. It's extremely disrespectful to assume what a dead person would/wouldn't support. Dr. King layed the groundwork for Obama to be where he is, so it very reasonable that Obama honors his legacy. We love to complain about stuff as its going on but history will remeber Obama for his civil rights achievements. Just looking at Healthcare and student loan reform, Obama has done more for "the people" than the last 5 presidents combined.

I think given the complexity of our society, it's easy to rationalize being offended, especially if you appeal to rather nuanced things

I agree with many of the assertions made by Dr. West. But for certain, Pres. Obama will not be standing today leading this country without the work of Dr. King whatsoever. I feel Obama placing his hands on King's bible symbolizes one of the successes of the Civil Rights Movement and shows Obama's gratitude towards Dr. King for the groundwork he laid the foundation which made it possible for a person of color to become president.

I'd say its more hypocritical for said politician to swear on Lincoln's:mjpls:and MLK's bible given they are the antithesis of each other. Hell a President swearing on the bible in general is bullshyt :heh:

:wtb: Obama doesn't honor anything of King. He uses him in speeches and such as footnotes but where is the action in his words? If he truly honored King's vision, why he doing everything opposite.,
