I see what you're trying to say, it's just not going to go over well on this site.

Beverly is great to have as a defensive guy, and a dude that will hit the occasional 3, and you turn Russ into Bojan which frees up Schroder as the go-to guard.

In reality, Beverly has almost always been a negative this entire season, and Russ has given us life off the bench, turning Bryant into a legit starting center.

We're in a Schrödinger's Cat situation, where if we lose Russ, we lose backup assists to bigs but gain shooting (which potentially ends up evening out, and not improving the roster) or we keep Russ, get no shooters and potentially end up with boneheaded plays that cost us valuable games, or worse, a game in the playoffs.

The best of both worlds is to get a guy like Bojan without losing Russ, and limiting Russ' opportunities to fukk us by potentially benching him in critical situations. Schroder has proven he should be the closing guard. He can shoot, get to the basket with ease and is a 90% free throw shooter, which is exactly what you need in close game situations. The Lakers are ALWAYS in close game situations.
Russ hasn't really given them shyt tho, breh. It's all an illusion.. Overall, he still hurts more than he helps. I do think his playmaking can be a legitimate asset but you're not gonna win anything meaningful with a starting point guard that has the second worst TS% in the entire NBA and the single worst eFG%. We've seen teams stick their centers (Nurkic, Turner, Kornet,) on him during crunch time to clog the lane and completely neutralize the Lakers half-court offense. If they don't move him they're essentially punting on trading 47 million dollars for quality players because of a guy that could possibly give you 20-25 minutes a night of good playmaking and horrible shooting/scoring (and even that is a tossup, some nights he's just passing the ball to the other team). If by some miracle this team sneaks into the playoffs with Russ, defenses are going to be even more relentless in exploiting his flaws. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

Russ- 47 Million
Bev- 13 Million
Nunn-5 Million
Lonnie- 6. 4 Million

71Mil in salary..if Lakers let it expire, they only get 35Mil back in cap space..

only reason they let Russ expire is if he already OKed coming back on a ridiculous discount and we got a verbal ok from kirie for that 35.

Russ has given us life off the bench, turning Bryant into a legit starting center.
As if the first statement wasn't ridiculous enough, the top-5 most played two-man lineups with Bryant are:

Schroder and Bryant - 359 minutes
Bron and Bryant - 292 minutes
Pat Bev and Bryant - 244 minutes
Reaves and Bryant - 239 minutes
Lonnie and Bryant - 219 minutes.

Bryant has literally played more minutes with every other guard/playmaker than he has with Westbrook. Surely you're watching the games and realize that their minutes have barely coincided with one another, especially after Bryant was named a starter and Westbrook was still coming off the bench?

I still don't know why some of y'all are fooled by his play to the point where you have to convince yourselves of these delusions.

Russ has been good at getting Bryant the ball.

Still overall a huge net negative though.

Regardless of that though, he's not the one responsible for turning Bryant into a "legit starting center".

He doesn't play enough minutes alongside him for starters, and it's not like Bryant's game is any different to what it was in D.C. It's yet another one of many things that folks have falsely attributed to whatever they think Westbrook is doing out there. Just as when those tried to credit him with AD's revival.

I don't know if it's out of sympathy for him or what, but it's not even remotely close to the truth.

Bev is more useful than Westbrook, imo. Bev atleast plays a role that can function on any team, this game just reinforces to me that they could be a legitimate playoff team if they traded Russ. When Bron and AD are back there isn't gonna be enough usage to go around, wouldn't you rather Schroeder get those secondary ball-handler minutes instead of Russ? If they were able to turn Russ and a 1st into say, Bojan and Burks, this team could be an offensive juggernaut when healthy. You also get a legitimately deep rotation with 10-11 guys with diverse skillsets. Russ is just redundant on this team when he's arguably not even better than Schroeder on a minimum.

I agree I like Burks in a trade even if they keep Russ. He's the scorer with size that this team needs.

I just realized that Bron is well on his way to another All-NBA selection.

The 5 locks right now would be KD, Tatum, Giannis, Bron, Zion (if he plays)

AD could be 6th if he plays enough but it's really not looking like he will. That leaves Jaylen Brown, Randle, Sabonis, DeRozan, PG13....none of those look likely to pass up Bron unless he falls off big time. So basically he just has to keep playing healthy and at the same level and he's in.

That would be his 19th All-NBA selection. No one else in NBA history has more than 15. That's a wild fukking stat, especially considering all the great forwards whose careers he has overlapped with.

If Lebron keeps playing at the same level his numbers will surpass Durant and Tatum and he could be a legit first team All NBA candidate.

His December numbers are better than all of them.

And AD is considered a center not a forward.

I'm not entirely sure you read my response to you.

I am not caping for Russ. I'm saying Russ > Beverly, which is opposite of the argument you put forth. Russ overall has been a better player than Beverly, including all the boneheaded plays Russ makes.

Beverly is 6/3/4 on a putrid 39%. He's averaging less than a steal a game, which is supposed to be why we have him. On ball defense is good.

Russ is 15/8/6 on an also putrid 40%. He is averaging a steal a game, in 0.8 more minutes than Beverly. On ball defense is decent.

Let's look at some numbers, excluding everything involving LeBron.

Since Davis got hurt, and Bryant became the starter, Russ/Bryant on the floor connected for 32 of Bryant's 176 points, or 15 out of Russ' 74 assists over that span. That's 20% on both metrics-- total Laker offense and Russ's total assists. A fifth of our production is the Westbrook/Bryant connect.

You lose Westbrook, you have to find that connection from somewhere:

- Dennis is a scoring guard. He can pass, but his first instinct is to shoot, which will relegate our starting center to a rebounder, instead of a scorer.

- Reaves is a great passer, but he's not getting 74 assists over an 11 game span, even with more minutes. He averages 2 a game on similar minutes to Russ.

- Beverly is a willing passer, but not a smart one that's going to find the C when he's open. He almost always looks towards the perimeter on his fake/dribble/drive.

- Walker is something of a hot dog. He's almost always looking to get his, similar to Cavs Kyrie Irving. Dude gets tunnel vision something fierce, and I've seen him wave off an easy lob to LeBron to attempt a layup himself.

>Westbrook and Bryant work perfectly together, and none of our other guards work like that

>Bron is the only other willing passer that has this connection with our starting Center

>Moving Russ requires us to acquire shooters, and any shooter we bring in (Hield, Bojan, etc) isn't passing to Bryant either

:francis:

Looking at that production, there is no way you give up Russ to keep Beverly. I understood your original argument was to give more minutes to Dennis in a scenario that we part with Russ, but Dennis is streaky too, and he's always been streaky. We would miss those 8 assists off the bench, and 15 points per game, whereas we can stomach the loss of Bev's on ball defense and 6 points.

Everything you said about Russ is true of Beverly-- nobody guards either of them on the perimeter, which allows the paint to be clogged. Having both on the floor at the same time is something we routinely employ, stupidly enough. They are for all intents and purposes the same player from an opposing game plan standpoint, only Russ produces more, which makes him the more valuable asset to keep.

Do I think we should get rid of Russ and find shooters? Look, at first the answer was fukk yes. But now, I'm conflicted. He's bought into his role, and is producing. If I can keep Westbrook AND get shooters, I don't see why we don't do that.

:yeshrug:

At the end of the day, will I lose sleep if we trade Russ and get depth for his 47 mil? Absolutely not. I appreciate him turning things around, but I want the Lakers to win, and if losing him is addition by subtraction, then so be it.

I've come around on an argument I've been having with my barber about trading Davis. I can see why y'all want these dudes gone.

if you get shooters.. you have to redistribute some possessions.. TB would suffer either way.

when AD is back.. TB will lose a crap load of possessisons..

the record is not good enough to justify keeping westbrook. over getting shooters.. but if next year he wants to sign to 5-8 mil... im for it.

I wouldn’t mind that either tbh.

Like I said, I’m not caping for Russ, just explaining why if the choice is between him and Patrick, you choose Russ.

And that connection Russ has with Bryant is the same he had with AD.
