If you haven't visited mexico city, or have CLOSE SECOND HAND ACCOUNTS, don't drop links about decapitations or kidnappings.
I'm considering a trip to Mexico for Dia De Los Muertos for my birthday, and am wondering if this is a good or bad idea based on current Mexico City situations, the holiday itself, etc. If I were to rate my spanish i'd say its like a 3/10. Enough to know if i'm in trouble and order food.
Any advice [locations, do's / don'ts], or is this a trip to reconsider?
1. Stay in Polanco, Roma, Condessa, or Centro colonias like the rest of the gringos. Unless you paid for some type of exclusive car service, Ask the people at the hotel the best way to get from point A to B.
2. Carry an Xtra 50 to 100 dollars on you juuusst in case the police try and hustle you.
3. Register with the US Embassy. Anything could happen (volcano, earthquake, el chapito...)
4. Under no circumstances chase or follow vagina into the hillside favelas or hoods.
5. At least get some type of translation app on your phone if your Spanish is limited. Most people in the gentrified areas speak some English, but don't take that chance.
6. Call your phone carrier just to double check and confirm your phone / plan will work there. It should but shyt changes.
7. Watch your budget. The peso v dollar is stronger than previous years.
Finally, the DOD is normally a family at the graveyard thing (like a block party if u will). However CDMX does have a parade and some activities for the touristas etc. Either find a family that turns up for it or goto Oaxaca and celebrate it there.
Have fun and be safe.
