Sad :(

Conflict and escalating violence have uprooted a record 6.9 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mostly in the east of the country, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday.

Years of rebel conflict and recurrent natural disasters have helped fuel one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world.

Most of those forced to flee their homes live in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri and Tanganyika, according to the data collected by the United Nations.

In North Kivu alone, up to one million people have been displaced due the ongoing conflict with a Tutsi-led rebel group M23, IOM said.

"For decades, the Congolese people have been living through a storm of crises. The most recent escalation of the conflict has uprooted more people in less time like rarely seen before," said Fabien Sambussy, IOM's head of mission in Congo.

IOM said since June it had built 3,347 emergency shelters and distributed 7,715 kits with non-food supplies but warned that operations remain underfunded.

Just terrible. Under reported in English speaking countries.
Lets be real: most often it will illicit an "Oh, thats a shame" and people will get back to dealing with their own issues. A little acknowledged fact about life is sometimes we see awful shyt like this, thank whomever we believe in that we were not born there, and go about our business.

Women being raped, kids being slaughtered. People killed , homes destroyed. But all you hear about is Gaza and Ukraine

And guess what? Most people go "Oh, thats a shame." and go about their business. The ones who think about it most typically have roots in Gaza and Ukraine. Also, when the media covers something, they have something to gain. What does the Congo offer nightly news? Probably nothing that won't result in MAGAts getting their fix on black people bashing.

I hear what you're saying. I try to find an organization or house of worship of diasporans from said country, and try to contribute to help in someway.
However small it may be, it will help somebody.

That is fair. I'm just saying if I step outside, I can definitely find a black person in need of help and I can give him something immediately. What happens on the other side of the world doesn't register until this land becomes Eden which is impossible. Outside of conflicts that might become world wars, everything else takes a major backseat in people's minds.

IMMIGRANT TETHERS
what would exactly be the point of this new being covered nationally on american media?

what will that accomplish. it's not like the us government doesn't know about this. what deference would it make if the average citizen did?

Agreed with you that people have lives, responsibilities, concerns of their own, was just telling you my thoughts and reaction to stories like this.

Believe me, breh, i'm 100% with you. I'm unfortunately slipping, as many do, into that space of defeated indifference. Honestly Covid beat a lot of the "general concern" out of me due to how even asking the bare minimum of folks so we could all survive was deemed too much but a great many people. It's horrible to know that we might still be talking about the Congo in 10 years and nothing will change and we as individuals don't have the power to change it. In my 30+ years on this Earth, the only thing I have ever known the Congo for is war. That is how long this shyt has been going on. Obviously give when you can I would never discourage that, but when we cover things in the news, its kinda like when I hear a shooting here in Chicago and they say "South Side/West Side/Harvey/Stoney Island/Englewood/etc" and not only do I know the places that are being reported on, but it doesn't spur me to any sort of action or emotion because the problems those areas had have been beaten into me by news coverage since I was young.
