it should be ddr3 laptop ram you should be able to get that for cheap online it likely has twin slots for the ram so a 4gb card in each slot should work

stick with something cheap if you don't need something more expensive. you can use the money you save for cool accessories, like nice speakers/headphones, a real mouse, external hdd, etc

I recommend Lenovo Thinkpads, but those aren't cheap, so I dunno. Just avoid HP.

I have a Dell netbook that runs fine so I guess that's OK. I don't know about the specs but if you are just using it for school it is probably fine.
