In fact, I'd argue that the coastal states, really cali and ny, and the pathologies of the bp therein, represent the lack of racial awareness we forged in the south. Because there are so many 'others', we get confused. In the south, things are clearer. They play a sneaky game here, utilizing black and brown immigrants as a buffer class in a way thay doesn't really happen in the south.

Ados in nyc are usually (unknowingly, really) in predominately ados circles or subsumed into whatever immigrant sub culture going on around them. Historically, uptown and the bronx had the Dominican and boriqua sub culture; Brooklyn and queens had west Indians. Africans are, historically, 'new'.
