You're conflating the cause of the publishing of one bible to how/why Christianity was embraced by enslaved Africans. @Jorvan is correct that there are various reasons why slaves converted to Christianity. Yes some slaves were taught a defanged version of Christianity in hopes that it would make them more docile. Just like in the article you referenced, they removed the anti-slavery portions of the bible and pushed that version of Christianity to the slaves. Slaves from Congo were already Christians because the Kongo Kingdom converted to Christianity in the 1490s, which predates the slave trade.revisionist history!

If I remember correctly most of the conversion to Christianity of slaves came in 2-3 waves. Some of the first non-Congolese slaves converted to Catholicism because some of the stories of the saints reminded them of the orshas (probably not spelled right) in their native religion. This form of Catholicism that merges the ancient orsha stuff w/ Catholicism is still practiced by many Afro-Brazilians. The 2nd wave came during the 2nd great awaking in the early 1800s. This period is when most slaves started to convert to Christianity. The stories of Moses leading his people of freedom resonated with the slaves. This is also when some of the bigger slave revolts started happening. This was because slave preachers like Denmark Vessy and Nat Turner saw the bible as a liberating book and inspired them to seek freedom.
There's a lot that's left out that I can't remember. There's a ton of nuance that's missing about why it was the 2nd great awakening in particular that most slaves converted. I got to dig up those books to remember. It's been years since I took that history class. But the above is the gist of it.
