my nikka, frankie beverly still sellin out the essence and jazz fest in new orleans every year, and every other concert he throws.

i think with old school music its more about the generational rift that separates the two. down deep south, the blues are still appreciated by the youth and is evident in samples and shyt.

i think the fact that you speak of comes from the different "genres" of blacks that you have, sadidy blacks, rich blacks, old school blacks, ghetto blacks, sellouts, young blacks, hbcu blacks, all expected to like the same shyt.

Mannnnnn I stay in Dallas, thesenikkas aint tryna hear that classical shyt

Also black people only make up like 13 percent of the Country so that right there is enough of a reason not to have a business that ONLY caters to black folks. :pachaha:

No kooning BTW :whoa:

american blacks made a group of people in the united states/overseas, $1.1 trillion richer...was it you?

it's not like Black-Americans practice Group-Economics. We buy, mostly :usure:, based off emotional decisions and rarely give thought to who we're trading our dollar to. :ld:

Basically, fukk trying to sell "to black people." Just sell to people with income for what you're selling. Depending on Black people (especially you ARE Black :usure: :youngsabo: Yes, the game is THAT deep/sad :snoop:) will get you in the RED quick. :whew:

ONLY 13 PERCENT BUT THE BUYING POWER IN THAT 13 PERCENT ISN'T TO BE IGNORED.

INCOME ISN'T THE ONLY DECIDING FACTOR WHEN PICKING A MARKET FOR YOUR PRODUCT. TRYING TO MARKET A SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN BLACK FOLKS WOULD BE A WASTE EVEN THOUGH ANYBODY COULD TECHNICALLY AFFORD IT. IT'S A NICHE MARKET BUT THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THESE PLACES DO PRETTY WELL. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN YOU TRY TO MIN/MAX PROFITS ON PAPER. YOU COULD APPEAL TO A LARGER AUDIENCE TO GET MORE MONEY. THING IS YOU HAVE TO COMPETE WITH PEOPLE IN EVERY ARENA THAT ARE MORE FOCUSED IN PARTICULAR AREAS.

TYLER PERRY IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF STAYING IN A NICHE. HE CATERS TO A NICHE MARKET AND DOES VERY WELL. HE OBVIOUSLY WOULDN'T DO AS WELL TRYING TO APPEAL TO A WHITE AUDIENCE. HE STAYS IN HIS LANE AND GETS HIS MONEY.

This is very much true.

But (just playing Devil's advocate) how long will it be till that niche market gets tired of your product? Eventually you either have to become more creative/innovative OR try to appeal to the masses (or in other words "selling out")

We've seen what happened to all those urban brands like FUBU, SouthPole etc.

GENERALLY NICHE MARKETS DON'T CHANGE MUCH. IT'S LIKE YOU MAKE A VAMPIRE THEMED SHOP. YOU SELL CLOTHES AND VAMPIRE RELATED ITEMS. IT'S A NICHE. VAMPIRES ARE VAMPIRES. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP UP WITH THE NEW VAMPIRE TOYS AND GADGETS THE VAMPIRE NUTS WILL KEEP BUYING.

THING IS WITH SOMETHING LIKE URBAN WEAR THE LOOK ISN'T THE DRAW. THE NAME AND STYLE COME INTO PLAY. ANYBODY CAN MAKE HOODIES OR SOMETHING. WHEN PLAYING TO A BLACK CROWD YOU NEED THE ILLUSION OF EXCLUSIVITY. AND THAT'S THE PROBLEM. YOU CAN'T BE EXCLUSIVE AND WIDESPREAD AT THE SAME TIME. WON'T BE LONG UNTIL YOUR EXCLUSIVE BRAND IS NOW THE NORM AND PEOPLE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE NEW EXCLUSIVE AND YOU'RE NOW FUBU OR PHAT FARM.

IT'S MUCH BETTER TO CATER TO UPSCALE WHITE FOLKS AND MAYBE GET LUCKY AS THE FLAVOR OF THE MONTH EXCLUSIVE. RALPH LAUREN, NAUTICA, LEVIS WERE ALL BIG NAMES BEFORE THEY GOT HOT IN THE HOOD. THEY WILL BE AFTER WE STOP fukkIN WITH THEM TOO. NOW THEY JUST GET TO ENJOY THE EXTRA REVENUE WHILE WE ARE ON THEM. THAT'S THE WAY TO GO WITH CLOTHING IN MY OPINION. BUT THEN AGAIN I'M AN OUTSIDER TO THE FASHION WORLD.
