Not entirely true.

When I first got the RROD, MS sent me a coffin and I mailed it in and they fixed it for free.

When it wouldn't power up at all 3 months after that, I asked for another coffin and was told, "Sorry, you're out of warranty and out of luck."

Kudos to MS for making the groundbreaking move of fixing products under the terms of the manufacturer's warranty. Truly innovative.
