You want me to make it respectable or make it profitable?

If i want to make it profitable it's going to be part Issa Rae, part Zeus network/RHOA types and part music/podcast creatives

Except for Issa all that stuff is cheap cost, cheap production, and easily recyclable/replaceable talent. Issa and her creatives would make the Sunday Night premier block, the Zeus network types would be strengthen the Thurs- Sat evening blocks.

All other premium times are covered with sports, music, and YT type podcast creatives.

Wouldn't cost much and would bring alot of eyeballs if content was exclusive through the network and stream app.
You own it and you run it so you can do it however you want.

Highlight Black artist who haven't blew up yet

Everything you listed is cool. But this right here is gonna have you burnt and in the red. It sounds great on paper, because we know what you mean.

But how would you do it? You obviously aren't getting black artists who are signed to any major labels. I mean you could but suppose you have someone that does some interviews, debuts some independent music and plays a BET original concert special that blows up. Suddenly they're mainstream and whatever major label they're involved with puts them on tour, puts their music in tv ads and movies, they start signing deals with clothes and doing tv cameos and shyt. Do you give them the boot from the network because they're no longer that small time talent?

Or if they're truly independent at what point does the exposure from your network blow them up to where they sign with a major, then are they too big for your network?

At some point the artists are either going to outgrow that undiscovered/ not mainstream / underground stuff and either you're going to have to share the talent and play ball with the majors (especially if they start doing features) or open up your network to not just the undiscovered/ hidden gems.

It would almost be like commercialized public access tv where some independent artist would have to pay to be seen. Which major labels pay and exchange performances for interviews and promotion. They could just utilize your platform as a stage to test market and promote smaller artists in which case the network wouldnt be true to that mission, unless that's what you want.

I think it would be tough but you'd have to do everything in house and keep everything in house. Sign writers, producers, directors, musicians, artists and actors. I don't even know how that would work. Like if you signed some young black actor who did several movies under the bet umbrella then dude from black panther or something wanted to cast him in a big Hollywood movie....

It might work but it could be bunk. Hallmark has all them terrible has been Hollywood actors that obviously can't get top roles or draw, but is imagine if any one of them got an offer from someone large in Hollywood they'd take the role and be back in theaters or streaming on major platforms.

Commercials keep the station afloat, unfortunately. shyt even YouTube and prime have ads.
Yeah but not to the point where watching a 30 min show damn near 20 mins of it is commercials. BET is the only station on TV that does that foul shyt.

I can't tell you the last time I sat and watched TV on a network station. I installed Pluto on my TV and would turn that on for background noise, started doing that in August and Jesus fukking Christ every 2 minutes was political ad after political ad. Now that the election is over it's the same stupid ads over and over again every single day. Im pretty sure they cut certain scenes out of shows to cut down on run time just for more ads. I know they don't run commercials where they would usually be on TV, you can tell because of how it's edited and played. But then again it's all free and since it's I think paramount shows or something the ads keep them afloat. Terrible terrible shyt.

I would balance out the content. Add news shows with actual journalists not just commentators, maybe some cooking shows, a show that travels across America to black neighborhoods stuff like that. Hard to think any of it would be possible though because there isn't much money in it so they are beholden to their parent network.
News and HBCU sports were big when BET started. I hate to be cynical but young folks don't watch TV news though HBCU sports may have an audience.

Gen Z and Alpha kids do not watch TV news, movies, or music videos on TV. Unless you want BET to be the Black version of those stations with the Andy Griffith show etc (and maybe this is a market?) that won't fly.

That's a direct result of BET chasing dollars and also more broadly the results of the telcom act back in the 90's. When black people owned radio stations there were plenty of talk, news, politics segments on air in addition to breaking new artists locally which in my view funneled into BET at the time.. Allowing corporations to own large amounts of stations gave them the ability to buy out all the black stations and you see the beginning of pay to play and more formulaic hip hop.

Younger folks would be more apt to tune in to this stuff if we hadn't stopped producing it in favor of chasing money or having the wrong politics.

Separate it into 3 channels: BET news, BET entertainment, and BET kids.

Part of the problem was that people expected BET to be all things at once, no other channel had that expectation

Stop showing 4 mins of content and 8 mins of commercials for a start:skip:
Start here…

Also they should really play videos again. Play the mainstream artists and then have a show for lesser known artists. I think they’re trying and are making strides, I think they need to cut down on the reruns and Tyler Perry shows though.. please cancel assisted living :scust: Also my wife was all about The Oval and Sistas.. she don’t watch them shyts no more because she said they went off the rails.. stop doing that and run good shows.
