Just watching the premiere of this new Carla Gugino show - 'Jett'. They filmed it around the way - so I was always going to give it a shot.

So far - pretty good. It's giving me 'Pulp Fiction' vibes. Solid cast too - Giancarlo Esposito and Mustafa Shakir are both in it. The chick who plays Holly from Power is too - she was good in 'Get Shorty'

Cinemax is really going in on these type of shows:ehh:

just watched this too

:mjcry:
Thought this was weak. Poorly handled Muslim xenophobia and unnecessary non-Indian leads. A movie focusing completely on the hotel personnel and how they risked everything for their customers would have been more intriguing.

I have a hard time judging these kind of films (based on real life tragedies). Ultimately are you trying to tell the story? or are you telling a specific version of the story? Either way, the film was ok but it did feel like something I'd catch on TNT on a Sunday afternoon.

As for the islamophobia, I think they tried to play it down the middle but the film did tend to lean more against the religion throughout the film. For instance, they showed the ignorance of the woman in the lounge but then they ultimately forgave her for her ignorance (not a fan of that). The Russian cat was also going unchecked for his bigotry too. As for the terrorist, maybe they could've delved more into their situation that lead them to choose this life (show how Brother Bull was persuading them and using them more) but I did get the sense they were poor kids whose families were promised money, and they felt they belonged to something bigger than them.

As for the white leads, I completely agree here with you. It's pretty clear the white folks were added in to make a white audience care about this film more

This was certainly something :heh:

White privilege/entitlement and plot armor on full display until the very end. One thing I'll give Joel Schumacher credit for, he's aware of this and isn't afraid to admit it within the movie (like A Time To Kill). Black man is going through the same thing he is and all he did was raise a picket sign up in front of his old job and the police took him away immediately. Mike Dougie outchea wrecking corner stores, slicing up gang members, surviving drive bys with Uzi's, and shooting up fast food spots before the police can even get a bead on him. The precinct just couldn't believe it was a nondescript white man capable of all this.

Still...this was fairly entertaining.
