I saw this a couple weeks back, but it had really stuck with me. Especially Pike's performance. Probably my favorite this year.

Very impressive Belgian drama about one of the Coli's favorite subjects. Lara is a teenage boy (played by debuting actor Victor Polster) who is undergoing procedures to transition into a woman, a process made even more difficult because of her dream to become a ballerina. What the movie does really well is that it stays away from socio-political melodrama about acceptance. In fact, for the most part Lara receives nothing but support from her dad, her school and ballet teachers and her family. The dramatic core that lies at the heart is an often ignored factor about transitioning, namely the person's struggle to accept who they are as long as they have not (yet) become who they want to be. The film subtly starts with Lara puncturing her own ears so she can wear earrings, because, as she explains to her dad, she just felt like it. It's a small thing about her idea to appear more feminine and it's easy for us as an audience to understand. As the movie progresses and you start to see the actual lengths she goes through, some crossing unhealthy boundaries, it becomes clear that even surrounded by people who see her as a woman, the only thing she ever sees is everything that makes her not a woman. The movie places you inside her head so expertly that you understand exactly where she's coming from and realize even in a society that does not judge transgenders, they will always judge themselves the hardest.

Asghar Farhadi's first non-Iranian film is (surprisingly) a Spanish film. Laura (Penelope Cruz) returns from Argentina with her two children for the celebration of her sister's wedding. When her daughter disappears after the party it puts a spotlight on the family, or more specifically, the relationship between her and her ex (Javier Bardem). In typical Farhadi fashion the plot itself is secondary to how it affects the characters' relationships as everyone starts pointing fingers at each other and old wounds are reopened, but unfortunately there don't seem to be that many old wounds and the ones that exist are so predictable that the drama drags. Add that the reveal to the mystery of the disappearance falls flat and doesn't shed any new light on the dramatic events, and the film ends with a whimper. At least the film is filled with fine latina women.

Yes and yes. Probably the worst movie of 2017. Belongs in the movies that changed to completely different movies midway through thread.

White man will save him don't trip.

Purest cringe in it's purest form.

Matt Damon by the end of the film.

The pointlessness of the entire problem the movie presented.

Trying to lowkey be a climate control film.
