And there it came, out of nowhere, the best movie of the IFFR so far, Alipato: The Very Brief Life Of An Ember. Of course most people hated it and it now has one of the lowest scores of the festival but I blame that on the wannabe culturally engaged snobs not getting the brilliance of this Philippine punk rock cult masterpiece. Credited as "A film not by Khavn", the movie tells the tale of a violent street gang of crazy children who murder and rob their way through the dystopian Philippines of 2025. It's a film of brilliantly coked out madness, such as an opening mock tv-network called National Pornographic Channel which runs news headlines at the bottom of the screen such as "Miracle of birth happens for the 83 billionth time", immediately followed by the headline "Rest of U2 perfectly fine with Africans starving". But once the satire blends into full-on low-budget arthouse Mad Max, the audience found itself depleting slowly, while the people who still sat in their seats looked at each other after each departure with a silent stare of 'Shall we leave too?' I had a blast though and despite being weird as hell and fukked out of its mind, it is incredibly well-crafted for a piece of rebellious punk shyt. I realize though that it's near impossible to explain the atmosphere of the movie thoroughly, so I'll leave you all with the trailer and the anecdote of some old white guy in a suit who loudly declared it always have to be those 'fukking Asians!'. I doubt he was talking about their ambition and incredible vision.

A Belgian drama about four disillusioned teenagers and their parents' incapability to understand what's going on with them. It pulls off some decent intensity to sell how far removed these kids are from their parents, and how parents are all convinced they do a good job parenting their kids even when the exact opposite is happening right in front of their faces. The only thing that kinda gets in the way is that there's not really any character arc. There's a big dramatic moment as the centerpiece of the movie but the movie basically only gives us a look at their lives, and doesn't expand on them, which leaves some potential on the table.

Rey tells the true story of a 19th century French lawyer who make his way through the Chilean jungle to declare himself king of the land ruled by the natives. After gaining the actual support of the natives who hate the Chilean government, the Chilean army captures him and puts him through a mock trial to silence a rebellion. Filmmaker Niles Atallah spent 6 years on the project, burying some of his first footage in the ground to let it age and deteriorate so the movie would seem more dated, as well as adding archive footage of the Chilean jungle and natives. Add an expansive use of actors hidden behind masks and stylistically it's one of the most visually interesting movies of the festival, even if it's sometimes hard to understand what the hell it's trying to be.

The Last Painting is a Taiwanese thriller-drama about a female politics student who rents a room in the apartment of a painter, once a strong political activist but now disillusioned with the idea that the world can change. On the heels of the first female president of Taiwan, it's a movie that thoughtfully and artistically explores the relation between politics and art in a former strong patriarchal society where gender roles are rapidly evolving. In this movie's case quite literally too, as the best friend of the lead is a transsexual, thus literally exploring a switch from man to woman. It was really damn good, and I figured because the Coli loves transsexuals so much I'd included a picture of the Q&A afterwards so you can all have a look. She's the second from the left (click to enlarge).

And unfortunately I encountered the new worst movie of the festival. After an okay start, Haruneko, which explores the relationship between the living and the spirits of the dead, becomes an absolutely undecipherable mess, but far worse than that, incredibly fukking boring. fukk this piece of shyt!

One of the best crowd movies you'll find at any festival, Raw (Original French title: Grave) is a horror comedy about a shy vegetarian virgin girl who goes to veterinary college and has to go through the brutal hazing process. After getting her first taste of meat, she develops a rash-like allergy, but it's not long before her body hungers for more, and the movie becomes a quite weird allegory for losing your innocence in college. It's hilariously fukked up despite being directed and acted quite seriously, which only adds to the shock value when the meat-crazy white girl does some sick-ass white girl shyt again. It might be a slow burn for horror/gore fanatics, but it works tremendously. And it would've been the perfect 'Them white women is crazy, breh' movie of the festival, if it weren't for...

If there's one movie that embraces #GMB as well as 'That's what you get for messing with them pawgs' to the fullest extent, it's Lady MacBeth. It tells the story of the young Katherine who is bought by a rich nobleman to marry his son so they can produce an heir. He doesn't care for her though and so she is treated as furniture. When both men are out of the house for a while, she quickly proceeds to the GMB agenda and starts drinking heavy and fukking one of the stable boys, while shushing up her black servant maid, who can't speak up because what can a black maid do face to face against the might of the self-entitled white woman? With her father-in-law and husband set to return sooner than later, Katherine starts plotting schemes that will not end well for anyone but herself. The result is a very atypical costume drama, which would best be described as a tragedy if it weren't for the fact the dark turn it takes is delivered fairly humorously. It is gallows humor, certainly, but much like Raw, it's better to laugh with the crazy white woman
