Coldstone Like It, but not a Love It. I’m actually kinda shocked at how much praise it’s getting, and that’s no disrespect to Cate. Story just didn’t come together for me that well. Trailer made me think it would go down the psychological horror route and it wasn’t really that. Instead, it sprinkles in teases here and there while making me wonder what a Todd Field-directed horror film would be like. It’s more of a character study on a narcissist conductor whose world falls apart and keys in on the dangers of grooming behaviors.
Movie made me feel dumb at the start with the amount of music theory/history lessons thrown at me, but I settled in well. My main gripe was the ending. It came off underwhelming given how good it starts off and the way it portrays the protagonist’s deconstruction for the majority of the runtime. It’s likely intentional, but it felt like I was watching two different films by the end. May appreciate it more after a second watch because there are definitely a lot of things I missed out on and plenty of ambiguities within.
Direction was pretty sharp for someone who hadn’t put anything out in over 15 years. The framing was Kubrick-like and even had some of the same dark humor. And it’s true, Blanchett puts on a hell of a show here. This was indeed her baby. She will be nominated for an Oscar (again), though she has some damn good competition ahead of her this year.
