I'm finally tackling my front yard which was overtaken by weeds after a water line repair. I hate chemicals but I got impatient and glyphosated my entire lawn while my bermuda was dormant. Now most of the weeds are dead. I put down a pre-emergent a couple of weeks ago as the bermuda started greening. Instead of seeding the dead spots, I'm just going to fert the hell out if it and let the bermuda do it's thing. I bought a pro plugger to move some healthy grass to the bald spots to spreed things up. This tool is a gamechanger.

I’ll have to look into that tool breh, thanks for sharing. I also have Bermuda, and am trying to fill in some spots that have been slow to come back from winter dormancy.
I don’t overseed. Can you give more info on the pre emergent?

Also, I really only use weed and seed in late fall and very sparing outside of that. Do most weed control the old fashioned way pulling it out of the turf. I fertilize almost exclusively using ammonium sulfate. But that has been increasingly tougher to find where I’m at. I mostly follow the recommendations published on university of Arizona website for our climate
I did put down a product called revive when it began greening up a couple weeks ago, it’s like a soil conditioner/improver

Here's who I follow for bermuda specific information. There's way too many products out there so I'm just sticking with big box for now. For pre-em I put down some Spectracide Weed Stop granular.

Here's a video on plugging. It's pretty dope because if you seed a bare spot it'll almost certainly be a different color than the rest of your lawn. Plugging keeps it consistent.

Appreciate this!
I had not even considered the idea of plugging as a means to fill in patchy areas, and had bought seeds in past and present and have applied them somewhat haphazardly with not great results. And add to the fact like you said, it’s not the same variety (usually) as existing grass phenotype. Damn birds sure enjoy that shyt tho! I’m def gonna try this approach. Makes sense too as Bermuda crawls, so last week I had scalped for the first time hoping to encourage that lateral growth. I’ve been at this just shy of 2 years as a new (finally) homeowner

Can I ask where in the country you’re at? With Bermuda I’m assuming southern US as it’s a hot climate grass. I’m in az so I try to adhere to more localized regimens as far as watering and other general guidelines. As an example, in summer, I regularly water at nite just to allow the water to seep deeper into the turf whereas in other areas that’s a recipe for fungus and other adverse effects to the lawn

Can you or anyone else speak to aerating the lawn via one of those machines that pull soil plugs?

Any alternatives to Scott’s Weed and Feed?

It works well, but looking for something less chemical filled.
So I do this shyt on the side right. And what I’ve seen that works the best is, the andersons surge. Apply that shyt early in the morning when everything still has dew on it and it does the job. Expensive though

Had a tree uproot in a storm next to the house and have 2 60 ft trees that just rain leaves and branches year round.. costing me a months pay but getting the 2 big ass trees removed and then I'll fill in with soil and then I need to reseed the whole yard :manny:

Next spring redoing the mulch and redesigning my mulch bed in front of house

So I have always done overseeing in the spring which I'm coming to understand is like hard mode, still I'm going to do it but try a fall overseed this year.

Feel dumb now not ever taking into account the soil temps in spring which are much lower than fall. Smh

Coli coming through with the info!

I literally tilled and seeded my entire backyard a month ago and the grass is already around 5 inches tall but I can see where patches will be.

I needed this thanks

Suburban thread :myman:

Just got my first yard to take care of when I bought a house in December. Mowed a few times already too, looking forward to aeration and overseeding this fall for sure.

I'm in central Arkansas, Zone 8a. This is my first year actually investing in my yard so I'm still learning. Aerating and dethatching is too advanced for me right now.

I'm here to tell u, these are the least complicated methods to improve your lawn, there are manual tools ( not powered ) to accomplish both and inexpensive power tools ( corded/electric) for less than 200 you can use throughout the year. The dethatcher/power rake with a scarifier is the best option in long run imo

My tribe :blessed:

I've tried to aerate and overseed in the early fall, do a last weed/feed treatment in the late fall, apply pre-emergent late winter, weed/feed treatment early spring, and pray for the rest of the season lol.

My biggest worry is crabgrass. Mid/late summer, it starts showing it's face in my back yard. Initially it was because of my yard being dry, but even with sprinklers it still comes out :scust:

To make things worse, my neighbors have landscapers and Tru Green come out and treat their yards. I like doing it myself, but I may jump to the dark side

Most all my neighbors have landscaping done too, but like you, im enjoying doing it myself. Neighbor on the side of me had a tiny tru green sign pop up in the front of there yard about a month ago (with a QR code :jbhmm:), didn’t realize that was a thing. They must have let their old landscaper go and left that up for the HOA to see cause their shyt looking pretty bad right now
