French can take a minute because it's like English where you have a gang of homophones and silent letters. It's also not that phonetic of a language.
If you put in an hour a day for Spanish, you'll be straight after a year or two. I say that because the most difficult part about it is memorizing the verb tenses, and figuring out how the different dialects butcher the language.

This reminds me when I was trying to speak Arabic with a Tunisian kid, we both looked at each other like scooby doo and switched to English. Alot of the North African version had slang and French mixed in. When the creolized/slang version comes into play it's like you have to translate 3 or 4 times in your head.
Kinda like Caribbean English, Pidgin West African English vs British/Australian vs Canadian English vs American English.
Funny story, I brought my old lady stateside to the midwest and she heard a white guy speaking like he was black from the hood. She looked at me and said "what kind of english accent is that" I said it's a white guy talking like he's from a black neighborhood on the west side of town.
