Since people always come in to say, “But the Senate will never convict,” here’s what I’d say if I were Democratic leadership:
“Based on a mountain of evidence, it is clear the president has committed high crimes and misdemeanors. If that weren’t enough, he’s shown a persistent dereliction of his duty to uphold and defend the constitution. It is almost certain that this process will not result in his removal from office. Senate republicans have shown time and again their unwillingness to stand by their principles, and have supported the president’s criminal behavior at every turn.
“To this, many will ask: why put the country through this process? Our answer: it is the right thing to do. No one is above the law, and we will exercise every power we were given by the constitution to provide checks-and-balances, as a co-equal branch of government. And that means holding public, televised hearings so that the truth can be aired, and the American people can hear these charges first-hand. It is about justice, it is about the rule of law, and it is about the constitution of the United States of America.”
