I like Roman and he delivers in the ring, but he's not a character that people can get behind because he's stale and hasn't had any kind of character growth since he left The Shield. He's exactly the same, and the only thing new about him is that occasionally he does new cool-looking moves (his moveset has improved in the last few years - at least when he isn't spamming superman punches and driveby kicks). Simple fact is, he's boring. The only time people got back on side with Roman was basically for nostalgia - rejoining the Shield.

And it's hilarious that people bring up vanilla midgets and subtle jabs at Daniel Bryan fans. The fact that it's a customary stick to beat fans over with is weird considering how popular Bryan was and the fact that he was legitimately a great talent. This then becomes exacerbated into a caricature of 'smark fans' who only want smaller, agile wrestlers at the forefront. This would be at least funnier if the two most over wrestlers in the company wasn't; a giant, cartoonish man who literally throws his arms up in the air and goes "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWRRRRR", before fukkery ensues; and a 300lb Bulgarian. Those guys are larger than life CHARACTERS, with actual CHARACTER GROWTH. Rollins is starting to build his character up again, although they need to focus him a bit more.

Roman has done none of these things. He's got better in the ring, but he's still a boring character. Simple as. Nothing to do with not being a 'vanilla midget', and everything to do with being a boring character.

It all comes down to the fans wanting to feel like they're in control and getting to choose who the top guys are. Cena and ROman don't suck, but they're not the guys the fans chose, and after being raised on Austin vs McMahon they rebel against the idea of the McMahons choosing who's gonna be the hero of their stories.

WWE just has to run with it and adjust their storylines to it. Trying to convince a pro wrestling audience that they're not thinking hard enough about who they're booing, or doing something immoral by booing a guy who deserves his spot, is dumb as sh1t. Fans caring enough about this fake sh1t to really hate someone is a special thing.

Fans did choose Cena though. They turned on him after the fact because of how he was booked, which like someone else said was a deviation from what got him over in the first place

Dudes who keep bringing up the DBry/Indie Wrestler love keep forgetting that two of the most popular wrestlers on either roster are a 315 Lb Bulgarian and a walking meat tank (:dame:) powered by fukkery.

And on top of that, Velveteen Dream is one of the most over wrestlers in NXT

It doesn't matter why fans don't like him, the fact is we don't and theirs nothing they can do about it at this point.

WWE have to be the only tv program or entertainment company in the world that flat out doesn't give a fukk what people want to watch.

Agreed.

Imagine if like record companies kept trying to force rappers on people that nobody liked or bought their records.:russ:And then insulted the audience for not buying the records
Why couldn’t they have booked this way and openly insulted their customers 20 years ago instead :francis:

Exactly, it might have been better if Turner & them won the war:yeshrug:

"Stop being sheep and just enjoy the show."

You think he realizes how much he contradicted himself here?

:russ:Yeah, don't be their sheep, be our sheep

My thing is I never see any convincing arguments for why people who don't like Roman should do so.

He's good in the ring? Fair, but so is, like, half the damn roster. That hardly is enough to make him stand out.

He's improved on the mic? Great, but he's still average at best; especially when you compare him to Cena, The Miz, or Samoa Joe to name a few.

His character? What character? Roman's character boils down to "used to be in The Shield" and some catchphrases. I've mentioned this before, but there's nothing there for people to really grasp onto and relate to. In a word, he's boring.

Is Roman the worst wrestler in the world like his more ardent haters suggest? Nope. Far from it. He's not my cup of tea, but I would be hardpressed to argue he doesn't deliver when and where it counts. But this idea that exists among his fans and people in the industry that others are somehow wrong for disliking him despite there being many legitimate criticisms of him as a performer and his booking is ridiculous. WWE fukked up pushing him. That's not the fans' fault.

Which leads to the much better question, and the one that not a lot of people seem to answer:

Why should people like Roman Reigns?

I actually have time for the dude and I couldn't give you a convincing reason except that he looks the part and puts on regularly good matches :manny:. It's enough to be moderately compelling but not enough to be your lead character IMO.

There’s nothing interesting about him and he’s pushed so heavily despite there being nothing to him. The crowd doesn’t want a guy presented as the top face while being a cardboard cutout. That’s the same problem Cena had. As soon as they sent him to raw, they stripped away everything that got him over in the first place and pushed him in a manner that is insulting to the crowd, always stacking the odds against him and so heavy handedly demanding the crowd to love the guy while basically saying anyone who boos him is just a jackass who wants to derail the show and make it about himself. That sort of shyt insults us as paying customers. At no point in the last 25 years has this type of push worked for any wrestler in any promotion. If they’re so bent on pushing him, actually give him depth and make him interesting.
And the worst part of Reigns' push is they're so afraid of the fan reactions yet so insistent on doing it anyway that the whole thing is half assed. They manage to over push him and book him horribly at the same damn time. None of his wins are ever convincing, and he gets his ass kicked so much that you never get the sense that he actually belongs where he is, just that he's there because that's what WWE wants

It’s like they’re throwing scraps at the crowd to say “see he isn’t squashing everyone so that should be enough for you people”, but that makes it worse. All it ends up doing is make his opponents look bad while there rarely seems to be much in the way of storytelling or psychology to his matches. Just trading strikes and slams to pad out the time of the match until they start spamming finishers. They say all the time that as long as he gets a strong reaction that it’s good, but in post production they edit out boos, edit in cheers, edit out shots of signs critical of him, and they’ve even spliced footage of fans celebrating when he loses into his entrance so that it looks like they’re cheering his arrival. It’s donald trump levels of insecurity. I’m really not sure what they think there accomplishing either by having everything sit in neutral all year every year just so he can headline this time of year for his big crowning moment that the crowd shyts on every time. It clearly isn’t working and it gets more stale every year. It’s almost like they don’t actually have a plan to get him over at all and just have this plan set on repeat without actually putting any thought into this at all. It’s mind boggling how inept they are at getting someone over that they want to be a star :mindblown:

They're basically booking him like its Extreme Warfare Revenge where they can just out a guy in a position, ignore all of the fine details, and if it's not getting over just manipulate the game code:mjlol:.

If this was EWR Vince would be getting mad notifications that the fans aren't buying Roman in his spot and he needs to put him in the midcard or else ratings will keep going down:lolbron:
