Yup.
Their agreement was no matter who does what, we get credited as The Neptunes.
At some point around 2009ish Pharrell was cranking out a ton of music on his own and it was obvious it was his stuff solo as a producer. The 4 beat count beat count becomes more of a thing to a point where it’s a regular thing. They weren’t event in Virginia anymore because Pharrell moved to Miami.
People drift apart but if your mans ain’t trying to do as much work as yall used to then you gotta keep it pushing. But are you splitting the pie 50-50 still? Maybe out of loyalty but when 100% of the work is yours then do what you gotta do. This industry shıt ain’t for Chad and he’s also not in his 20s anymore like when they first started. Things change.
Yeah
I noticed sometime around that year that they were working more as solo producers than a duo.
Chad still lives in VA
yeah and i think at the time, Chad was more focused on his family and Pharrell even said that in an interview years ago.
but i agree with what you said. i definitely think this industry bullshyt ain't for Chad and who could blame him?
i think as long as Chad can write and produce music without having to deal with a lot of the bullshyt that comes with the industry, he's happy.
him and Pharrell have more money than they can count, so it's not like either are hurting for money
and your right, things change and as people get older, their outlook and goals change too.
i remember Chad saying in an article, something along the lines of "how could would it be to just work at a Guitar Center?" - im paraphrasing of course
all that said, i hope for their sake of their friendship, they work things out. they've given us a life time of classic music but for the sake of just them as close as they once were, i hope they can work out their differences and at the very least be on good terms again.
They have a deep ass catalog and will eat forever because of the songwriter credits but it’s clear Pharrell wanted to so way more stuff. When the BBC/Ice Cream thing came out fųckin 20 years ago it should’ve been obvious to everyone spend them.
And to keep it 1000, Pharrell linking with Nigo was a plus for them as a brand and in turn opens a new demographic onto Nigo, who has never said a bad thing about Pharrell. They work well together. Imagine your partner linking with someone else who doesn’t even speak the language and they build stuff in a completely separate lane.
Not saying Chad felt some kinda way but it wasn’t just going to be those 2 in the studio forever and ever. Same way artists have shelf life, so do producers but they just happen to have been exceptional enough to extend their run.
oh yeah, they're good good.
and you know, part of what made them work so well together was you had half who was the more outgoing one and the other who was far more quiet and in the background. that's truly what makes for a great duo, honestly. because one somebody has to take the lead and the other has to sorta be that backbone to make sure they stay grounded and leveled. they complemented each other perfectly as a duo
good point. that does speak volumes. P and Nigo still on good terms too.
true and i think Chad is good still being able to do write and produce music without having to be in front of a camera like Pharrell is, works just fine for him
i don't know if you ever got the chance to read this article from last year but it's a great interview w/ Chad

What’s Next For Chad Hugo? “It’s Time For The Spinoff.”
The Grammy-winning Chad Hugo, the producer behind The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., looks to the future.vogue.ph
Chad will be ok once he figures out his sound but also who does he want to produce for? Stick with rap or something else. He isn’t a songwriter so this will be more about the beats and sounds with him.
Pharrell can write his ass off and genre hop. He dropped that Black Yacht Rock album with zero promo and didn’t put it on streaming services. The whole thing sounds like a lighter tone version of Yachty’s last album minus any electric instruments. Despite him being busy making goofy clothes at LV, he’s still committed to music and can still get placements. So he’ll be fine.
