Black Hawk was a leader of the Sauk people, who were pressured to give up Midwestern land in the early 1800s. A treaty they considered unjust forced them out of modern-day Illinois and west of the Mississippi. Like many Indians who opposed land-grabbing American settlers, Black Hawk sided with the British in the War of 1812.

The Braves, who played in Boston and Milwaukee before moving to Atlanta in 1966, trace their nickname to the symbol of a corrupt political machine. James Gaffney, who became president of Boston's National League franchise in 1911, was a member of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party machine that controlled New York City politics throughout the 19th century. The Tammany name was derived from Tammamend, a Delaware Valley Indian chief. The society adopted an Indian headdress as its emblem and its members became known as Braves. Sportswriter Leonard Koppett described Gaffney's decision to rename his team, which had been known as the Doves, in a 1993 letter to the New York Times: "Wouldn't it be neat to call the team the ‘Braves,' waving this symbol of the Democrats under the aristocratic Bostonians? It wouldn't bother the fans." And it didn't, especially after the Braves swept the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1914 World Series.

Wow. Thanks brother. :salute:

Is the term “Indians” on par with “Redskins”? I didn’t know it was offensive. I knew the logo was, but not the name.

What about the Chicago Black Hawks? Atlanta Braves? The names, not the logos.

Just imagine if some hockey team called themselves the "Vancouver Negros" and had some half-assed drawing of a black man as their mascot, but virtually none of their fans, players, or organization was actually black. It's objectifying as fukk even if the word itself isn't a "bad word".

There ain't no "Compton Caucasians" or any other teams named after all White people in general, but all sorts of teams are named after Indians in general, cause Amerikkka views them akin to animal mascots.

The Sweet Science
Not clowning either, but do you have any answers? I’m not understanding the “Indians” term as being offensive. Didn’t find anything on it.

Well Columbus called them Indians because he was a fukking moron(and a racist, murderous piece of shyt) and thought he found India. They are in fact not Indians and white people have purposefully used the term as a kind of fukk you to Indigenous peoples, the fact is more Native/Indigenous people I have spoken to(admittedly it's not a lot but there has been several) and things Ive heard and read indicate the they find it more offensive than "Redskin". As an example it's kinda like being called colored or negro. It's... cringy (I guess is the word Id use) when another Black person says it but when a white person say's it, well I personally get pissed. I dont claim to be an expert on all the nuances but I do know Indigenous folk fukking HATE Christopher Columbus and I think that also plays a small part in hating the word as well since he coined the term.

All I can say is I have never heard from or of them using the term to describe themselves or their people but from what I do hear those who do are seen as ignorant or a c00n (I dont know the equivalent term but basically it fits)

Does the Cleveland Blacks, the Cleveland Africans or the Cleveland Dark Faces bother you? It’s the same thing.

To be fair the Boston Celtics is a term for whites from the British Isles but since the term has died out and the average person has no idea what a Celt is, it doesn’t hold any weight.
