Classics Discussion: The Roots

Ok so some of y'all will be familiar with a project I'm deciding to run. I made this thread: The Official 'Classic Album' Discussion Thread, trying to reach a conclusion as to what defines a classic album. After much discussion, I am running with this definition personally, so take it as you will when you consider your classic albums. But this definition in particular was most agreed upon.

Classic: 1. An album considered by consensus of the core hip hop community to be of the highest quality (doesn't have to be perfect or flawless, just an album that the consensus deems the shyt).
2. Assuming that condition 1 is met, is this an album that has stood the test of time amongst the core hip hop community? Is that an album still held in high regard, still referenced at least ten years after its release? By a consensus of the hip hop community?

Props to @mobbinfms for the definition and also for his help generally in helping me with ideas to create these threads.

So I'll be going through one artist per day, and I will list out all their discography or close to all of it until the year 2005, as we decided that an album needs at least 10 years of existence before it can be called a classic or not.

They been so consistent the past 20+ years but they lost me for a minute with Phrenology

Not a huge Roots fan tbh.

Personally I think Black Thought came into this own and became elite on that album. Malik B was still down. One of their biggest songs What We Do is on it. Clones is a banger. The first two albums are just fun albums but on this one they started to go into deeper subject matter. I can listen it all the way thru except for the spoken word at the end

I'm not necessarily questioning its quality, more so its relevance. Has it stood the test of time? Has it received the necessary acclaim? I think TFA did a better job of that, hence my yes choice. I think quality wise you can make a case for 2/3 Roots albums.

But as I said, not a huge fan, so I'm not as well equipped for this discussion as some others might be.

TFA is definitely their most famous album and prolly the best one overall. Illadelph was just the album that made me a fan. Organix wasn't originally released here I don't think so it was years till I heard it. And when Do You Want More came out I thought they were corny

Do You Want More?! is such an underrated piece of music.

It's in my personal top 5 albums (no genre).

If you've never listened to it before, or need to revisit it,

wait until a nice chill Sat/Sun afternoon when you ain't got shyt to do,

open a window, blaze/sip something, and let that shyt rock all the way through.
