Calling it defund the police was stupid. Refund the people. Reform the police. Anything other than that. I don’t know how they thought people would support that off GP. You have to be smart when you are trying to make shyt happen and these dudes time and time again prove they aren’t.

the ideas on which it was based - taking funding from police for non-police work to fund municipal social emergency response teams - made a lot of sense, tho it definitely isn't something that could happen overnight. only the slogan was stupid and huge misfire

Like Cori Bush in St. Louis?

The issue, like most things, is the media destroyed the movement and focused solely on funding the police aspect and hyped up crime around the country, which hadn't actually gone up. Most of our politicians have no interest in doing anything about policing, as evident by them doing nothing about it since George Floyd was killed. That shyt was intentional, and many black elected leaders were quick to support it because they are fine with police violence against poor black people---and living in DC with a black mayor and growing up in black as hell PG county, I know this because I have seen it.

I think defunding the police will have to happen if we want to have an orderly society, but the people who advocate for it need to start framing things as money for schools, money for mental health, money for roads, social services, health care, etc.

But saying it started by white liberals in gentrified areas is one of the most cacified things I have ever heard because it isn't true.

The media focused on funding because they chose the slogan “DEFUND the police” after being repeated warned how bad the optics were. And people who supported it just laughed it off; including on the Coli.

They focused on it because they didn’t want to address police misconduct and the criminal justice system, along with the slogan.

I don’t disagree, but the goofy thing is there was more ire for the slogan—which was promoted by activists—than towards the elected officials who done little to nothing to address the concerns that people have with policing and criminal justice.

Defund the police was an activist slogan that the right wing, the media and Democratic moderates placed on the "crazy" progressives because they don't want to see any change in the criminal justice system.

It wasn't the best slogan, but its also been used to do nothing about police violence.
The progressive came up with the slogan though.

Progressive Activists came up with the slogan, but most progressive politicians didn’t touch it. I can only think of Cori Bush running with it.

Moderates and the right wing used it to not do anything about police violence and criminal justice reform. And for some reason, wildly, most of you brehs are okay with that.

slogan wasn't stupid or a misfire . people been ignoring calls for 'police reform' for decades. it forced the conversation that needed to be had and people were informed on what defunding the police and reallocating funds would mean.

Indeed.

The problem though is that the media had no interest in learning about what it meant and instead focused on "fund." A lot of black "leaders" and black elected officials quickly dismissed it because they've sat by for years as poor black people got beaten and gunned down by police. I saw it in DC with "Black Lives Matter plaza" Mayor Muriel Bowser and PG County Police are one of the most corrupt and violent police forces in America has had a black county executive and county council since '92.

I think its incredible that more anger is thrown at this than there has been at the inability of congress to do anything on criminal justice and police reform.

i was in the "liberal capital" of the bay where cities actually defunded police depts, where there are strong direct lines from grassroots orgs to the general populace, and it was still an overly confusing and divisive term even if you did know the intent. not sure it forced any conversations with new parties (ie people who didn't already see a need for reform or those who lean into beliefs that would expose them to this topic), the slogan immediately turned plenty of people off, even once they knew the true intent. the slogan was stupid, getting people talking doesn't mean you got [new/unengaged/fence sitters/opposition] people listening.

Because black lives don't actually matter here and people think it's ok if black men and women are executed in the streets. That's all the past few years has taught me. This is the America everyone wants including some black people

Nothing saddens me, angers me, or damn near brings me to tears quite like the way I see my people get treated by American cops. I think because I myself have been a situation where I could've easily been killed by them on my way home from studying for school. I hate cops and I will hate them until the day I fukking die.

When I cop dies I couldn't not give less of a fukk. fukk them
