Christopher Nolan to Direct Action Thriller ‘Dunkirk’ For Warner Bros. (EXCLUSIVE)
christopher-nolan-inception.jpg

Christopher Nolan looks to be headed to France during World War II for his next project.

Sources tell Variety that Nolan will direct “Dunkirk” from his own original screenplay as his next project. Insiders say the yet-to-be cast unknowns will lead the cast, but that Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are currently in talks to join the ensemble.

Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner Emma Thomas.

The story is set during the legendary evacuation of the northern French city during WWII. Nolan and his casting department recently began testing teenagers in London for lead roles, but the director also wanted to nail down some choices for the few adult roles in the film before the holiday.

“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time,” Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production said. “‘Dunkirk’ is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

Warner Bros. has dated the film for July 21, 2017. The large-scale production will be shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film for maximum image quality and high impact immersion. Shooting will begin in May using many of the real locations of the true-life events, which form the background for the story.

Now this is starting to get a bit more news worthy.

Tom Hardy to Star in Nolan's WWII Movie 'Dunkirk'

Tom Hardy in Talks to Star in Christopher Nolan’s WWII Movie ‘Dunkirk’

Following in the footsteps of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick, Christopher Nolan is prepping an epic war movie titled “Dunkirk” about the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk, France. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance are in talks to star in the action-thriller, Warner Bros. announced Monday.

The large-scale film will be shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography for maximum image quality and high-impact immersion. Shooting will begin in May using many of the real locations of the true-life events, which form the background for the story.

The ensemble cast will be headed by yet-to-be cast unknowns, though Hardy, Branagh and Rylance will co-star, likely as high-ranking military officers.

Nolan wrote the script and he’ll also produce the film with his longtime producing partner Emma Thomas. He has already visited Dunkirk to scout locations for the re-creation of Operation Dynamo, the British military operation that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by German forces.

“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time. ‘Dunkirk’ is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen,” said Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. will release “Dunkirk” worldwide on July 21, 2017. The film will be released theatrically on IMAX, 70mm, 35mm and all other screens.

@ 'in the footsteps of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick' though, like those are the only two directors to have ever directed a war movie. Oh, silly media and their laughable agenda to make this man out to be greater than he is. :therethere:

Did kubrik make a ww2 movie?
to be fair Nolan is only 46, he has a way better catalogue than spielberg had at 46. And kubrick made a war movie after making sci fi, hence the comparison

Kubrick did WWI in Paths Of Glory and Vietnam in Full Metal Jacket, so although he didn't do WWII, he has two "war epics", as the article refers to them.

You know Spielberg was 46 in 1992, right? Long after Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, E.T., Empire Of The Sun and The Color Purple. Only a year before Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. And you're seriously trying to convince me thay Nolan has a better catalog than him? :russ: @FlyRy doesn't even believe that shyt.

so he didn't do ww2 :jbhmm: yet you said he did
I think nolan has a better catalogue than spielberg had at 46.
Over all spielberg has a better catalogue, no arguing that
Spielbergs greatest movies came later on....
Jaws ET and ROTLA are just OK movies. Schindlers list, SPR, Catch me if you can, Lincoln, Munich etc are way better than the movies you mentioned
You mentioned jurrasic park yet you didnt mention Schindlers list

I fixed it because the article worded it stupidly but Kubrick is known for at least two big war movies. :yeshrug:

And I did mention Schindler's List. I mentioned it right after Jurassic Park, lol.

Re-reading this, regarding the bolded, that's not even the point. Spielberg's catalogue at 46 is far greater than Nolan's, regardless of whether Spielberg actually managed to drop even better movies afterwards or not.

Sure atm Nolan is not touching Kubrick and Spielberg, but you cant tell me he cant get there in 20 - 30 years.
He hasn't made a bad movie yet
