According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, Suzanne Owen was placed under arrest. “Detectives arrested a local high school teacher for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with one of her students,” the Lee County Sheriff’s news release said.
The Sheriff's Office began investigating Owen after getting a call Wednesday from one of her friends.
The friend reported to the Sheriff's Office that she found out on Tuesday that Owen and the student had physical contact that resulted in a hickey on Owen's neck. The friend suspected that Owen and the student had intercourse, according to the report.
Owen and the student told an investigator in separate interviews that they have been communicating by email and text over the last month. The two agreed to meet at 4 p.m. April 4 in a parking lot at 13300 South Cleveland Ave. in Fort Myers, the report states.
The parking lot is a little less than 3 miles from Evangelical Christian, where Owen was an upper school Bible and Spanish teacher.
Owen and the student admitted to having sex in the backseat of Owen's car. Owen told the investigator that "she knew her actions were illegal," according to the report.
The investigation moved fast; it began on April 11, 2018, the same day that Owen’s arrest was announced, authorities revealed. “On April 11, 2018, Lee County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives began investigating an alleged sexual relationship between a 35-year old female teacher and one of her male students,” the Sheriff’s Department wrote.
Owen is from North Fort Myers, Florida. She was a teacher at Evangelical Christian School, which describes itself in its mission statement as “an independent Christian preschool through grade twelve. We offer a traditional Campus and Online Academy.”
Electronic communication has been a factor in many of the cases involving female teachers throughout the United States, and the Owen case is no different in that regard.
“Deputies responded to Evangelical Christian School at 8237 Beacon Boulevard, Fort Myers, and met with the suspect, Suzanne Lea Owen (DOB 07-09-82),” the press release stated.
“The investigation revealed that she had one sexual encounter with the male student one week prior, where the two decided to meet off-campus. Detectives further discovered the teacher had been communicating with the student through personal text messages several weeks prior to the incident.”
The bond for Owen, who is married, was set at $50,000. “She’s ordered not to have any contact with minors, and can only have supervised contact with her own children. She’s not allowed back on school property, or able to contact anyone that works at the school besides her husband,” according to NBC 2. On LinkedIn, she defines herself as a high school teacher.
“Suzanne Lea Owen has been charged with Custodial Sexual Battery, a first degree felony, and booked into the Lee County Jail,” the press release stated.
Before the arrest, Owen enjoyed a positive reputation in the school community. “Owen was a finalist for the Golden Halo teacher award, which is given for excellence in the classroom,” reported NBC 2.
Owen’s Facebook page has been deleted. Online records show she also has ties to Tennessee.
Owen is no longer listed on the Evangelical Christian School's website as being among the school's educators. She had been on the site as an upper school Bible and Spanish teacher.
Owen's husband, Jonathan Owen, is a soccer coach at Evangelical Christian, and her three children are students at the school, Suzanne Owen's attorney Geraldo Olivo said.
The private college preparatory school has more than 1,100 students in grades preschool through 12th, according to its website. School Headmaster John Hunte did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.
Olivo asked Paluck to allow Suzanne Owen to have contact with her children's teachers, but the judge denied his request.
The judge ordered Suzanne Owen not to have contact with any minors — save for supervised contact with her children — and the student she is accused of having sex with. She can't go to Evangelical Christian or contact anyone associated with the school, except for her husband. She must wear an ankle monitor.
"That no contact would apply also to teachers, and if you need information regarding your children, certainly you can contact your husband who can assist you in getting any information that you may need," Paluck told Suzanne Owen.
Olivo said he has met with Suzanne Owen's family, including her in-laws and her parents, who arrived in Fort Myers from Tennessee on Thursday.
"At this time they are still trying to process everything," Olivo said. "They obviously support Mrs. Owen, and they are standing by her."
