Word. It's all the institutionalized racism. The stuff he spits about Top Five being a different movie if it were to be made by a studio is real. Any smart educated brother is vilified or has to remember how to keep it real or some corny shyt like that
Reminds me of that aries spears bit where chris rock told him they gotta see u smile...dont scare em.

Chris Rock my favorite comedian ever, and this hit home. He was speaking a lot of real shyt here. More of these entertainers need to air out the BS in Hollywood and speak out.

you know i hate to sound like a nerdy fanboy but do you think perhaps star wars has the potential to be the thing that moves the industry forward? i mean what's gonna be their excuse after a movie with a black lead and his white girlfriend goes on to make a billion dollars and spawn billion dollar sequels???

plus do you think think once people see it in star wars, the biggest franchise of all time, it opens the door for more possibility in the future?

*** disclaimer: i have not read the spoilers about force awakens i am merely speculating that john boyega and daisy ridley will have a fling

i respect what chris rock saying. but im be real, this the same dude that hosted the oscars and shyt on black people in front of white people. he seems to have a lil self hatred going on. i dont really trust his consistency. 100% of this essay was facts. but other shyt he says is bs. like saying he isnt interested in black movies set before the 70's? gtfoh. dude acting like we have a bunch of black movies about slavery just floating around. we need a whole bunch on movies examining slavery, jim crow, redlining etc. but dude just wants comedies, action films, woody allen type stuff etc. its "all of the above" , not "either or" when it comes to the type of black films we need.

Possibly but the argument will be that it's star wars. It's going to make money regardless sometimes in spite of itself. System doesn't change man. Until there are black men and women in positions of power who can make decisions or bring people along the way, it doesn't change

To be fair breh he shyts on black people and white people equally whether it's at the oscars or one of his shows. And there are white people at his shows as well.

nah but i'm sayin if a movie that big can feature a black lead, that maybe it will make everyone (execs AND the general public) more comfortable with black leads in general.

Nope because it's Star Wars. That's the point. I feel what you're saying but the fact that it's one of the biggest franchises in film history and has become an industry to itself means it's going to make money regardless and if anything it'll make people want to hire that guy for more jobs but the idea that it'll have this ripple effect? Nope I don't buy it. This is a system that has been like this for years. Will smith was the biggest star in Hollywood and is still one of the biggest. His movies were consistently top grossers for almost two decades. Did it change anything?

fair point.

Yeah man I'm not trying to be too much of a cynic and maybe other current events are playing into my thinking but will smith and Denzel headlined movies and still do. They've been at it since the early 90s. And nothing has changed. Chris bought up the fact that Kevin hart is the biggest comedian in the world right now performing in front or 40K and yet he has to cross over? It's a system man and that system is not kind to brothers or sisters with melanin. Things have gotten better sure but it's still not as easy as it is for their white counterparts.

The only thing that will change it is time, generational shifts, and black people being in positions where they can make decisions. Chris used to tell a joke about the difference between rich and wealthy. There's a difference between wanting to be shaq and wanting to be the guy who signs shaq's checks. Eventually we gotta be the people signing the checks for things to change

Maybe it's cause I'm black...it's probably definitely because I'm black:manny:, but nothing about this was "blistering". Just a bunch of real shyt from a dude known to say a lot of real shyt. It was a worthwhile read for Chris' humor alone though. I died when he said "I don't care if I have to play a whip, I'm gonna be in a Steve McQueen movie":dead:

i thought it was interesting that he brought up mexicans too.

you think black people have it bad? try EVERY OTHER ethnicity has it even worse.

how long before we see an ASIAN superhero in the avengers. or a MEXICAN in the justice league?
