I think Nolans inability to decide whether to go the fantasy route or scientific route is the difference between it being really good or great. Had he committed to the fantasy route then he could have used aliens or whatever and not needed to explain shyt. Had he committed to the scientific route like the whole movie up to that point then there is no way Mathew makes it back alive even if he saves earth. I would have been cool with that.

Exactly. I thought the movie was finally going all-in in the last half hour or so and then the last 5 minutes were "meh". Coop surviving was a gigantic stretch but it would've been worth it to me if his comeback didn't feel like nothing.

Bad News guys. Disney take on Marvel's "Big Hero 6" is on pace to beat "Interstellar" at the box office. I knew this was going to be a slept on movie the minute I left the theater. The numbers look in line with "Gravity" and "Prometheus" opening though.

People hatin on Casey Affleck in this? I liked his character more than Jessica Chastain's to be honest. The movie was absolutely beautiful. If you don't see this in IMAX you're cheating yourself. I was shocked when Matt Damon showed up because I had no idea he was in this.
of course he was on that :demonic: tip

I think this movie is worth checking by the visuals alone. It was pretty amazing.

First part of the movie before Cooper gets to NASA: :obama:

From that point until they leave the 2nd planet: :what: :ld:

From that point until Coop reunites with Murph: :blessed: :ohlawd:

The meeting with Murph and the last scene: :ld:

What bothered me the most about the movie were the transitions before every big advancement in the plot. How Coop ends up being part of the NASA project was so rushed that it didn't make much sense at all. The whole "My Cocaine's character was lying all along" part of the movie was poorly handled, same as Dr. Mann's actions (I got the character's desperation but it could've been handled way better). Also, almost every character in the movie was either not likable or impossible to invest emotionally. Besides Coop, we were never given any reason to believe anyone on the crew was actually needed. The dude that died first was :manny: Anne Hatheway was unbearable for 90% of the movie, and the black dude was just "there". Actually, the only character's worth a damn were Coop, Murph, grandpa, TARS and CASE (the two robots were way more "relatable" than most characters).

But fukk, when the movie was focused it was PIFF. I really wanted Coop to get his and save mankind :to: The only thing that bothered me about the ending was how it would've only taken 1 scene to explain what did Murph actually discovered and how it helped humans. Also, the meeting with Cooper went from :mjcry: to :ld: quick as fukk. So after thinking he was never going to see her daughter again - his driving force during the whole film - he's OK with leaving as soon as possible just because?

Anyways. It's a very bumpy road but it's till worth it.

You missed the part about SHE don't want him around watching her die of old age. It was her request. She got to see him again before she died and everything that was set out to do was complete. There was nothing else left. And Cooper is an explorer. His entire desire even when the film started was to EXPLORE SPACE. When he was rescued he was already dissatisfied about being there. Reconnecting with Brand's daughter was just enough reason to set out to space again. There was nothing else left to accomplish.

Of course I saw that part. But it was very underwhelming that the payoff of Coop surviving a fukking black whole was him watching his beloved daughter for a while and then he's gone again. It was way too rushed and the emotion of them meeting again (which was very powerful, at least to me) faded away very quickly for no damn reason.

Murph had 60 or 70 years to come to the realization she wasn't going to see her dad or that she was fine with him exploring till the end of his days. But the way it's presented it comes off out of nowhere and it's just very underwhelming how everything unfolds. Coop surviving wasn't worth for what we ended up getting, imo.

In screenwriting we call that scene Foreshadowing. Before Matthew leaves for Space he tells Murph that Maybe when he comes back they will be the same age. But instead she actually outgrows him. This was a case that Nolan tapped into his Spielberg Emotional Happy Ending phase. The point of that scene was they put to much weight in the Father/Daughter relationship for them to not see each other 1 last time.

I understand, being that it was virtually the VERY END of the film. But the reason was understandable. Not to mention, but heavily implied, he was able to watch her GROW while trapped in the 5th dimension. End the end, at that point it didn't matter what was Cooper going to do? His daughter was on her death bed and did not want him around nor did he want to stay on that space station because he lacked a sense of purpose there. And don't forget, Coop was ready and thought he was SACRIFICING himself for humanity's sake when he dropped into the black hole

Again, I get that. But in short, I think the execution of the scene wasn't the best and wasn't worth Coop surviving :yeshrug:

We may have to agree to disagree. I felt the movie would to been completely pointless had Cooper died. I was totally satisfied with the last minutes of the film, because THEY DID reunite and humanity was saved. No need to dwell that deep in that.
