The NBA will decide how subservient they wish to be to the chinese government or not......China may well be xenophobic and nationalist enough that they can ban the NBA forever...their citizens will respond however they see fit.They may be timid enough.

The NBA however has the power also to realize that they can hold their partners to certain standards....And one of those standards is to respect the employees of members of NBA organizations.

Morey expressed a personal opinion, he did not say that this was the opinion of the Houston Rockets or the NBA and no rational business partner reacts like how the Chinese did..

And by the way no matter how much money a partner has....dealing with IRRATIONAL people ends up being not worth it in the long run

Simple rule going forward...if you are a Chinese business partner with the NBA...you pay all your money upfront so that in the event your govt strong arms you...that cost is at you...we already got the money

all of this because you said africa and india will replace china? africa as a continent has to get their economic game up considerably. that's a long term investment that they hope will pay off in 30 years like how china paid off. india has a huge middle class, but there was never any real work put in before in getting indians hooked on basketball like the communist govt helped the nba do. to get indians to love basketball like the chinese do is decades of work (and $12 annual league pass). basketball is the number one sport in china. cricket is by the far the number one sport in india.

anyway those long term investments were meant to be in addition to china, not replacing china. this is not something they can just brush off and say "oh we'll replace them with other countries."

I agree, it's just business and it goes both ways. How each partner decides to uphold their values against their revenue is completely up to them and whatever other external factors there are.

I don't think this is about freedom of expression, it's just that people are mad that business interests that David Stern who 30 years ago stood for hours to get a meeting with CCTV, basically blew up in 1 day due to one exec's tweet for something something that's been grossly misrepresented in the media. Like with the Sterling fiasco where he exercise his freedom of expression, it resulted in him selling the team due to pressure from players and the general population. It was a bad business decision and the fans and netizens of china has spoken and applied pressured to these companies that do business with the NBA, it wasn't the government that made them give up these deals.
