Chinese and Spanish developers that want to build Africa’s biggest hydropower plant, the $14 billion "Grand Inga dam" in the Democratic Republic of Congo agreed to form a single consortium in an accord the country says is a key step to realizing the plan.

China Dominates Bid for Africa’s Largest Dam in New Pact

  • The new accord signed this month brings the developers together into a consortium that comprises six Chinese companies, including China Three Gorges Corp. and a unit of State Grid Corp., and AEE Power Holdings Sarl of Spain.
  • The Chinese firms will hold 75% of the shares and AEE will have 25%.
  • The division of shares is “only valid in terms of the decision-making process between the two, it’s purely from an operational point of view,” Patrick Kabuya, the Inga agency’s spokesman, said by WhatsApp.

I agree fukk China. But this dam needs to get built somehow because its crucial for not just the DRC but surrounding countries.

I'm sure DRC needs this dam, but I want to know what are the strings attached with this project, we have seen what China did with other countries like Sri Lanka and Kenya.

some rocks in the ground called cobalt which congo doesnt use as they do not make cellphones.

they do, however need a better power grid, black outs frustratingly common. you can not build a country without energy, and they dont have the means to build their own.

unlike the west, china doesn't disrupt politically, and their interests are either none or very low, whereas the west will have you paying absurd amounts and then when you can't pay ...begin to topple the country with puppets.

china is more of a 'not our problem politically, we got what you need, and you got what i need." isnt that how trade works?

the DRC is ~top 5 richest countries in the whole world in terms of natural resources, so China is probably getting those minerals. shame the ordinary people of the DRC are among the poorest in the world though :francis:

and I do have some concern im not naive. my main concern is who will be running the dam. thats what folks should be worried about. because that thing needs to be ran, maintained and repaired from time to time. thats when you have to start squinting. will they be doing it, or training congolese.

for example here in the philippines. they make up like 80% of my condo. many of them working on a bridge, engineers etc. i would think its temporary, but the fact that they have their own food delivery services and a brand new market next door is quite alarming. however Duarte was smart enough to assure half their companies employ filipinos. and in a country poverty stricken and extremely high unemployment, they ignore it cause they can finally eat.

no one knows if theyll ever leave, i mean, theres a long way to go to build this place up, but the positive is you get work, and your country is being built and can potentially be built just as fast as china did as they build like army ants. being assisted out of poverty is never a bad thing. the trade off, start learning mandarin. but hey, better than coming over here raping your women, killing your men and taking your shyt free of charge.

DRC is gonna get fuked...it’s obvious. You let these cockroaches come in and build up the country....they really think they are doing it to help the Congolese or any African country they infest?
