Not only did Harrison Butker call his wife a "homemaker," but he told the men in the graduating class to "be unapologetic in your masculinity" and to "do hard things."
"Never settle for what is easy. You might have a talent that you don't necessarily enjoy, but if it glorifies God, maybe you should lean into that over something that you might think suits you better," Butker said during his speech. Over time, the NFL has made numerous initiatives to create an inclusive atmosphere for LGBTQ+ fans, players, and staff. These efforts include introducing NFL Pride merchandise and co-hosting numerous Pride celebrations at the Super Bowl with GLAAD, the largest LGBTQ media advocacy group globally.
Following Butker's speech, Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer
released a statement.
“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” Beane told
PEOPLE Magazine. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.
Former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn also spoke out after hearing the speech, claiming, "Harrison Butker doesn’t represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."
The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to comment on Harrison Butker's speech. His full speech can be heard
