The shooting occurred about 6:25 p.m. near 79th and Carpenter streets. A law enforcement source said a few dozen rounds were fired.
About three dozen squad cars surrounded the scene. A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said it sounded like multiple weapons were used in the shooting.
The neighbor said multiple victims fell in front of a liquor store between a laundromat and a funeral home on 79th, and many were bleeding.
Nine people were taken to area hospitals, most in serious to critical condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
