Growing up in Zimbabwe this film exposes very well how cold war era communist institutions were run, everything is about the party and admitting failure is a sign of weakness. Everything is about protecting the image of the party and people. The engineer dude who kept on telling people that they did not see what they saw with their own eyes is a case in point.

Sadly in democracies such as this it happens to. Al parties care about is looking good to pander votes. So they will cover up whatever they have to to protect the party's good name. When they fukk up they find one fall guy to blame it on so they can distance themselves and the party from him.
Sound familiar? I'd think the difference is when you just have one overwhelmingly powerful party and no alternative. Anyways'm no expert. I know I could be wrong.

You can cut the tension this show creates with a knife, holy shyt. Outstanding dramatization of a catastrophic event. shyt is scary as hell.
shyt is dope so far. Whole situation is haunting and sad at the same time. I'm not gon' judge the nikkas in authority not facing reality as long as they did, even when nikkas faces and hands were burning off right in front of their eyes, but I will say I hope I never become a nikka who just fall in line with that rank and file, chain of command bullshyt. Doing shyt that I know is fukked cuz a nikka "above" me.

It was bad enough when they mentioned that the active fire was putting out about two Hiroshima bomb's worth of radiation per hour every hour.
But I had NO idea that there was any danger that the plant could potentially go up in a 2 MEGATON explosion after the fire went out that would potentially kill 60 million people. Looks like this disaster was so much worse than I thought.

Well the big difference is accountability, it's not a surprise that the party official thought to cut phone lines as his first response and delayed any evacuation. In a democracy that is the end of an administration not to mention the political fallout that arises from their action, a political party definitely will not survive such a scandal even if they distance themselves. The worst a fall guy in a democracy faces is public humiliation and losing your job whereas when those comrades were taken away they feared death. The fear of death and show trials is enough to make officials reluctant to stick their neck out because if you get it wrong that's the end.

I think the show is doing a GREAT job of humanizing the citizens. Too often people think that "opposing" government officials represent the thoughts and whims of the common man.
All scenes with people not in command shows them demonstrating common concern with their situation and not falling in line. The firefighters, the pilots, the industrial workers risked their lives for the same reason that anyone other laymen in western society would risk their lives. I think that's an important theme to break the communist mystique.
