Is this a surprise? Broadway musicals appeal to a certain crowd. Every once in a while you'll have one that breaks out and the general public gets drawn to it as well, and even more rare of an occurrence you'll have one that is adaptable as a movie that will translate and resonate with the larger movie going crowd. I have no idea why a combination of people, including producers, director, and A list actors, not to mention the big budget backing of a major movie studio, all signed up for this as if this was going to be that rare property that checks all those boxes. Could see this being a disaster from the moment it was announced. They have a special kind of cocaine out there in Hollywood and live in their own little weird world where shyt like this is a good idea:manny:

When I was a kid this play was it. It was on Broadway forever, I think it broke a record for the play on Broadway the longest. I can see why some thought this was a transcendent play. I dunno, personally I just always been curious what it is all about. :yeshrug:

Nah I disagree with you . There are a lot of hit plays/musicals that can be easily adapted to a movie . It depends on the narrative and if it’s a musical the Songs. I think in the heights will do great . Hamilton would be great , dear Evan Hansen , hades town , Book of Mormon for newer musicals . Cats doesn’t even really have a story the flimsy reincarnation plot line with a bunch of songs ( which to me most aren’t that great ) . He should not have overcomplicated it if this was some movie hooper had to do but based on what he did I have no idea why anyone green lit this .

It doesn’t appear to appeal to people who may be cats fans and changes the most recognizable aspects of the play which is characters in makeup and body suits for a unnecessary cost of cgi for everyone

I grew up in the 80s abd remember the commercial for this airing a million times a day. It was definitely a phenomenon. But it's still one of those things where it's almost obvious they caught lightning in a bottle at that specific time and it isn't some shyt that will be easily duplicated, especially in a very distinctly different medium. That shyt always looked weird as hell to me as a kid btw. I didn't really know who he was back then, but I knew if they said "Andrew Lloyd Webber" back then that meant it was a big deal. Name rang bells like announcing a Nolan movie now.

I'm not saying there aren't plays that won't translate, but the appeal of a musical is less than that of a normal screenplay. And when you go with a weirder incarnation like Cats that's makes it all the more challenging. Then you add to it the changes that you mentioned regarding things like CGI instead of makeup and costume and it sounds like a perfect (I had to do it:lolbron:) recipe for failure:manny:

These are broadway morons in cats costumes. They look more like furries than actual cats. Half these actors probably never seen a cat a day in their life or worse yet own dogs smh

I bet if cats were to actually star in this movie, it would be getting better reviews than paddington bear 1 & 2
