They took pictures of him somewhere, one he is even on a cellphone, Maybe they took him to some semi secure location, took the confirmation pics, and weren't ready for the response, and had to give him up. This has never really happened before, and been documented. In 2015 in Jalisco, the same thing happened, and the gunmen shut down a helicopter, when they came for Nemeserio Cervantes Osguera, aka El Mencho, but they never had him in custody.
