Nicki was more calculated in the industry. She obviously had a natural talent and charisma, but the likes of Fendi, Deb and Gucci, Wayne, Drake, etc all gave her the co-signs to ride.... it was more like an industry push.
How Drake gon give Nicki a cosign when they were coming up at the same time?? Also Nicki had a more old school break through, she didn't have a social media apparatus to push her to stardom she had to beat her feet, get on DVDs and really rap her ass off.
Cardi connected with the people more organically IMO
Ppl connected with her underdog story which Atlantic Records took great pains to highlight and push. She is no longer an underdog, she's one of the big dogs and is literally shaking in her boots to release a new project. That's what happens when the goal is money only and the talent is relatability not bars.

Cardi was poppin in these skreets long before an Atlantic deal.

Drake and Nicki was label mates, but you don't see how Drake buzz helped her (and vice versa)?

Crazy she’s managed to stay so relevant with one album, but we live in the single era these days. Albums got no staying power
Not really crazy. Women view personalities more than the artist shyt. A lot of these women artists ain’t super active but if FEELS like it… through relationship shyt and other random drama. The women are into that more than the actual music. So there it goes. shyt when’s the last time “City Girls” dropped? They’re probably more relevant/famous than they were while in album mode. That’s how it is.

Hate to say it but Cardi B will have a bigger impact than Nicki when it’s all said and done. This bytch went Diamond off of rap records, no techno pop shyt. Came up with a cultural term that we all use to this day (even tho I feel like she got that from Kodak but whatever), won a Grammy for best rap album, and she ain’t got to sing on records to sell. Plus she don’t slick hate on other female rappers on some old cornball shyt.

No she won’t Nicki impact is huge, only a handful of male rappers even come close.

If streaming existed 20 years ago all of GRODT would’ve charted
This.

With this model 50 could have had a drake type run. He could have put out a hit once a year and just did little 7-8 track projects instead of mixtapes and his career would have been looked at completely different.

Right she had a social media following that allowed her to get on reality tv and use those platforms to broker a deal. I am very familiar with Cardi's come up and her 2 mixtapes. Doesn't change the difference in her come up vs Nicki who had to display extreme levels of TALENT not just PERSONALITY to get on.

Sure but Drake was not "cosigning" her in the way that a Wayne could and did at that time. Nicki and Drake were in the same boat signing to Young Money. Now later on Drake obviously elevated but that's a different convo altogether.

This was one of the most carefully crafted albums I can remember. Nothing was gonna stop this album from doing what it did, and that’s a reason why she hasn’t released another album after. Can’t strike lightning in a bottle like that again.
