This is a legitimate gripe. It is a very unnecessary change.
But we are talking about a fictional Dad not a real one. It's not like they are erasing an actual man from the story. But this seems like another SJW move heaping a female plight onto the movie. I can see why there is distaste. Just not a deal breaker for me personally.
I mean, you gotta think the movie is gonna rely heavily on "strong women."

Me personally i love strong women
Sometimes i let my girl put me in a cobra clutch.

So according to the EW pics, Ben Mendelsohn character is Talos who is posing as a human.

I'm guessing that's who Fury is talking about when he says he trusted someone and lost an eye.

The First Captain Marvel Trailer Should Arrive Within the Next Two Weeks - MCU Cosmic

Following the Entertainment Weekly Captain Marvel reveals this week, everyone is wondering when the first trailer will arrive. In fact, there are some people online really upset that they didn’t get the trailer yesterday, despite the magazine never releasing a Marvel trailer before. However, these EW Marvel covers have preceded trailers in the past, and traditionally it’s only been a couple weeks after the EW cover when the trailer went online.

I’ve been able to confirm that yes, the current plan is to release the first teaser trailer for Captain Marvel within the next two weeks. However I’ve also heard that it could arrive as early as next week. That sounds exciting, but that’d be earlier than trailers were in the past following an EW cover. I don’t have any reason to doubt this source, so if they feel like it could be next week it’s a possibility.

I don’t have the exact date yet, just a general range saying within the next two weeks and possibly as early as next week. As soon as I have the exact date, you can be sure I’ll let you know what is is right here on MCU Cosmic.

Talos isn't posing as a human. He's a skrull that doesn't have da ability to shapeshift. Well, in da comics, this is what it is.

My initial reaction reading the single-mom part is that their going to kill off Maria in the movie and Monica will blame Carol for it, setting up whatever resentment angle in future films since Carol and Monica had beef in the comics. Then i thought they may just recast an older Maria to appear in modern-day sequels as the 'uncle ben' robbie roberston aunt may moral compass role for Carol.

Not enough info to know for sure at this point

still have yet to see Ben Mendelsohn be compelling in a movie. every time i say that people tell me to watch Bloodline, which i will never do, so I'll just continue to just take your word that he's not always a piece of wood on screen.

You thought he was a piece of Wood in Dark Knight Rises?
Also, he plays a good H fiend in Killing Them Softly if you are looking for movies he's been good in.

i could sit here for 45 minutes and still have zero clue he was in the Dark Knight Rises. I have basically zero recollection of that movie though to be fair. all i remember was sitting in a theater for 3 days. I'm sure he played a shiesty banker/henchman/politician.

the only movie i can recall seeing with Ben Mendelsohn where he didn't bore me to tears was Mississippi Grind, where he just played a hardluck loser gambler.
