I disagree with this actually.
The main purpose of a movie review is to inform the reader about the film and its ideas. You come to conclusion on your own. they aren't trying to sway you one way or another.

I believe it’s both. They give you their opinion and inform but it’s also to persuade. You either agree or disagree. It’s persuasive writing. If you’re an influencer or a cultural critic, you’re tryibg to push someone in a direction. They’re either with you or they’re not

Ideally that is how a good critic would operate....but not everyone who is a critic should be a critic. I mean, nowadays damn near the only criteria for being a critic is having an internet connection and being somewhat literate.

You also need to factor in agendas and/or biases. I always thought it was odd how most movie critics don't give any info on their personal preferences....even video game magazines were doing that, 30 years ago. You wouldn't go to a sports guy for his opinion on an RPG, or vice versa.

To the latter, your editor is supposed to handle that. IGN talks about that all the time. They don’t let someone who’s not into fighting games review a fighting game. Just like they don’t let just anyone review madden or 2K.

Yeah but there's not really anything in place like that for movies. One of my homies I've known since 3rd grade is not into comic movies at all....I respect his opinion immensely but obviously I'm not gonna listen to him about "Captain Marvel". Nobody really factors that into mainstream movie reviews, though.

I do take this into account though. I vet reviewers based on stuff i already seen to see if their view tends to align with mine or if like you say they are pushing an agenda, or simply a person completely out of their depth that's not even a fan of the genre.

Also one more point on this. In a perfect world, that’s what reviews would be. But if that’s what they’re supposed to be, they wouldn’t come with scores. Or “see it” “don’t see it” ratings. Or even the most basic thing we know of: Siskel and Ebert’s thumbs system.

Personally, I think scores are antiquated and appreciate a site like polygon getting rid of them entirely

Because most people still don’t understand how rotten tomatoes works lol. They see that number and that’s all they go on. Now grant it, people don’t have the time to comb through every review or even read one at times, but there’s such a fundamental misunderstanding of how that site works, it’s completely shifted the conversation

I agree with this, getting rid of the scores would encourage a lot more objectivity from reviewers. Too many try to grade movies, but that's not what a review is supposed to be. It's supposed to be more like those book reports and essay's we did in high school. We weren't reviewing Lord of the Flies, we were explaining it or interpreting it. Most reviews are actually critiques which is completely different.

Yeah your job as a critic is to engage with it on a critical level, for better or worse. I don’t think the numbers make them less objective tho; I think it’s an easy shorthand for the reader. Like the two thumbs up system became shorthand for generations of film fans. You could do without the nuance of the actual review or it’s plusses and minuses. Just like the tomatometer.

If I see it’s got a 90%, I’m going to assume it’s worth my time. But I’m not factoring in those 10% of reviews who don’t think it’s worth my time and maybe those writers are more aligned with my taste. So then it’s “oh the reviews were wrong” when in reality, you didn’t do your due diligence from jump.
