Brother I don’t read, listen to, watch, or go by the words of movie critics, music critics, game critics, food critics, etc

Maybe I’m a control freak, who knows, but I just don’t let some stranger dictate what I should or shouldn’t like

The only critics I know by name are Siskel & Ebert and I haven’t watched them in decades

They're not dictating anything, just giving you their personal opinion on the movie. No different than asking a friend where a good barber is, in the end you will always judge for yourself.

I like to learn which critics often tend to share the same opinion on movies that i have, so if a movie i would probably like isn't on my rader they can alert me to it. So if i watch this movie and love it, but a critic i like says it's trash, i know to ignore their views going forward.

But see, that’s the thing.

If it came “a friend” then I’d put more stock in it.

Hell if my brehs here like @wire28 @jayshiggs @BXKingPin82 @Norrin Radd
and a few others post their opinions, it would hold more value.

But some random like that, that I have nothing in common with nor ever had (or will) a conversation with?

I’d rather just find out for myself and form my own opinion. And I’m not knocking anyone that does. Just it is what it is. I value my judgment higher overall

Marc barely reviews anything anymore tho. Hell do a guest column in Hollywood reporter but his reviews are on fatman beyond now. Too busy writing tv shows lol
I like to see him write for a marvel film. He has written for some marvel comics before. but usually they release a review on their fatman on batman channel but they can be late with how busy both of them are.
There is this other black youtuber i like to get reviews from though Eman's Movie Reviews.
He seems to be pretty invested in comics too, and not some bandwagon youtuber who never read the books before.

Yeah you’re right. There’s no science to reviews like the internet thinks. It’s just their opinion. You either agree or disagree and keep it moving. The goal of a critic isn’t to tell you factually this movie is bad or this movie is good or this movie is okay; their job is to make suggestions based on how the film affects them. They just get paid to write about it and help start the public discourse

Oh you’re speaking Greek to me right now lol. I don’t watch YouTube reviewers and I really don’t read that many reviews to be honest. I’ve got a few people I check for or listen to on a podcast but it’s maybe...five? I just got to a point where I really do not give a shyt. If I want to see a thing I’m going to see that thing and if I don’t, I won’t :manny:

I personally never really gave a fukk about critics. I've had critics mislead the fukk out of me in the past, the few times I did give them the benefit of the doubt.

Also most of the movies I watch are indie and/or foreign and rarely get covered by most media outlets, anyway.

The sole reason I'd read a review for a mainstream movie is to get a "vibe" for the movie. In this case I'm gonna read a few reviews to see the consensus on Brie Larson, because I haven't been wow'ed by her so far. Outside of that :manny:

I got homies I've known 25-30+ years, if they tell me something is good or wack it's gonna hold more weight than a random critic's opinion.

i don't quite get this connection of listening to reviews to whether or not you will see a thing. Just helps get a feel on what you can expect from the movie. I just want to know going in if i'm going to get a space comedy like Ragnarok or a espionage thriller about shapeshifters. either way i'm watching this movie. :yeshrug:

Well the idea of a review, if the writer is good anyway, is to sway you in one direction or the other. Like you said, it’s like going to your homie and asking if this barber is dope or not. If he says nah then there’s a good chance you’re not going to go. You don’t want to get a “feel” for it while he’s fukking up your hairline.

For me, a trailer gives me the feel. I watched the trailer for Us and that gave me all I needed to know as far as what to expect and how the movie will feel tonally. Don’t need to read a review after that.

The review and the trailer and any other promo work should all work in concert to sell you on the movie but a review goes into detail a 30 second trailer can’t.

I disagree with this actually.
The main purpose of a movie review is to inform the reader about the film and its ideas. You come to conclusion on your own. they aren't trying to sway you one way or another.
