I went to see it first weekend on the stregnth of blackness but man, he is just absolutely not convincing in anything he does. The entire cast of BP1, down to extras watching the fight are more convincing. Kang was more convincing. BOTH roadeys were more convincing. Bokeem woodbine as a henchman was more convincing.

He has never been shyt. I mean, my bad if I'm wrong but I think remember @CHICAGO talking about Mackie just being weak asf

He just AINT IT PERIOD. He is about as convincing as Kate Bishop and Captain Marvel (not all)
He has no acting range other than looking mildly confused and constipated. He made Joel Kinnaman look like an oscar caliber actor after signing up to ruin Altered Carbon. I legitimately have no idea how he's still around aside from having the look.

I don't get it either...the aforementioned Bokeem Woodbine is fukkin peak Denzel comparatively
Bokeem is actually an amazing character actor--who still hasn't gotten the caliber of roles he deserves. Meanwhile you got Mackie's stank ass single-handedly ruining entire franchises.

He never mails it in, steals scenes, and always delivered. Mackie was trying to convince us that he was captain America not because he was black...

...but because it was Anthony Mackie. You can't tell me for one second if Chadwick was alive, and they made him cap we wouldn't be at $200 million ALREADY today

Wackie has ZERO presence. I don't know if he is a secret psychopath incapable of displaying proper emotions or what. Chadwick had the combo of presence, talent and the looks--Majors had the same. Kang was the ONLY thing interesting going on in the marvel universe and they threw it all away for some lying CAC out for money. The writing was so fukking ass in the new antman movie and Majors was absolutely CRUSHING every scene he was in.

Lemme get my Coli Breh on for a sec.

Did anyone notice traces of :mjpls: in the this flick, especially the front half

  • Roughing up the suspect during the take down...
[*]Throwing the Innocent Black Man in Jail...
[*]"Son" - when I'm sure the script writers were prolly tempted to put in "Boy" (I kid...but...)
[*]Secret Service Sister constantly having "DEI" moments with Sam? (You know us folks gotta stick together) Shout out to Seth and Sydney in Severance.
[*]Joaquin being from Miami.....even though Joaquin isn't particularly Cuban.....
    [*]

[*]And taking it back to the series, I mean, aside from literal high schooler Peter Parker, we never seen the money problems of the other Super Heroes....
[*]And as y'all was saying above, there's a whole lot of "I'm not the real Captain" aspect to Sam's arc that started in The Falcon/Winter Soldier, that isn't completed. Even the little pep talk he got from Bucky didn't really get him. But basically we've had about 6 episodes and a whole movie of a Black Man doubting himself, BUT STILL supporting the "Republican" power structure
[*]And how come Black Panther fans ain't come out for Sam Wilson, certified ADOS/FBA breh from Louisiana? Where was the excitement? :pachaha:

Otherwise

  • Anthony Mackie
sort of down pedaled his "Mackie-ness" and was some what tolerable.
[*]Aguilar aka Latino Falcon - has zero chemistry, and his little "I always wanted to be you" speech at the end was not believable at all.
[*]They played Giancarlo. He had a few scenes of real menace in that mug.
[*]Gotta give it up to Harrison Ford, doing a lot of face acting in this. Not sure what type of Republican he was playing, but there were shades of not-Trump throughout it.
[*]The Mossad agent turned Widow - I don't understand her purpose or the amount of screen time. I mean, I get it plotwise, but this just seemed like a bad idea. And I wonder if having former Israeli spy being head of security for the president of the US was a bit too on the nose in light of recent events....
[*]Dunphy - I wanted them boys from Lioness to show up for real for real.
[*]The Leader - I guess they learned their lesson from MODOK and didn't lean into the comic book depiction. (Although I woulda had some Yakub jokes ready if they did)

Overall - It's not a bad movie. It's about middle of the pack for phase 5 (GOTG3 is easily #1 and Ant Man 3 is #5)

But this should have been a DL for me, but I gotta support.

Nowhere near the realm of a bad Marvel movie. This is one of those films that if it were a Yakub that was put in the same exact role, it would be reviewed much better than it did. This film is the push and pull between creatives trying and a studio that doesn’t have the same enthusiasm for Black characters as they do for the Yakubs (Armor Wars pushed back indefinitely, Blade on Ice, no T’Challa, Monica Rambeau in the bushes, etc.). I would not be surprised if Thunderbolts and F4 are more acclaimed upon release ; you can see much more care they are putting into those IPs. Mackie spoke on how he wanted Falcon and Winter Soldier to be the film, but Marvel wanted a show, and how that frustrated him.

It’s a solid film that establishes Sam as Cap through his internal battle of whether he’s worthy of the Cap mantle. It also felt like a day in the life of Cap, and that worked in my opinion, especially with him being a counselor. This film didn’t need the cameos and extra flair that other Marvel films generally have, and the volume/CGI is mostly forgivable; the action is pretty decent too. This will probably be one of the MCU movies that will get its just due down the line.

A lot of Yakubs didn’t seem to resonate with any of the relationship between Sam and Isaiah. Even some of the language, like that speech about being enough at the end, split my theater into two with a collective MHM from everybody Black and dead silence from the Yakubs. They could have fleshed out Sam and Old Girl’s relationship more, but we know what we’re dealing with.

Mackie kind of acts like he has the personality of a c-tier fat comedic actor in the body of a leading man :dame: but none of it is believable.

Just realised Seth Rollins got cut out of the film. :mjlol: :mjlol:

wow....that is brutal for Rollins but they weren't wrong. Seth Rollins in that role is like Batroc (good luck remembering him) or Crossbones. Esposito was at least...acting...

Just finished watching it

This was definitely a very flawed effort but no way in hell is this deserving of the worst MCU tag people were trying to put on. I’ve been in theaters for some movies that were so bad I had to walk out

That said they need to come way harder for Thunderbolts & F4 to lead into Avengers next year

Also agree with the brehs that’s there a better version of this film with Banner as the protagonist than Sam. This was an Incredible Hulk follow up more than anything else

I agree with some of the criticisms of Mackie but I think marvel fumbled not immediately having him reform the Avengers. It’s the best role for him

Movie as a whole gave me old MCU vibes. Contained story that connects to the greater one that doesn’t have the fate of the damn universe at stake at every turn

Solid B film
