That was one of the ways you could get your name known to those in the biz, going to other peoples blocks and battling, constantly testing yourself, might end up in a studio session, start getting shown/learn how to craft records.

Hypothetical battle match ups are pointless, the point I was trying to make was that your initial premise was way off the mark.
Who can beat who is based solely on time and place and whoever brings their A game.
Like I said the guys you mentioned all came up in a time when competition was fierce, getting on was more like an act of god.
