Sources close to the situation have told BoxingScene.com that a fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28KOs) is on the verge of being finalized for May 2nd at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas.
Alvarez, had hoped to be facing Miguel Cotto on that date before negotiations broke down and the deal was taken off the table over the weekend . Back in 2013, Alvarez drew nearly 40,000 fans as he battled Austin Trout in this venue.
The hard-hitting Kirkland, who hails from Austin, Texas, has not made an appearance in the ring since stopping Glen Tapia in December of 2013.
Canelo-Kirkland was actually on the docket to take place at one point in 2012. Kirkland withdrew from the bout with a claimed injury only days after agreeing to the terms. He was ultimately replaced by Josesito Lopez, who was stopped in five rounds on September 15th of that year at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
It will be interesting to see what happens with May 2, as discussions continue for a Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight on the same date. If Mayweather-Pacquiao is finalized, which many are doubting at this point, then Canelo's fight is likely to move to a different date.
