Jacobs Not Worried About 2nd Weighin, Plans To Be 174 in Ring

By Ryan Burton

LAS VEGAS - A lot has been made about IBF middleweight champion Danny Jacobs in the lead up to his May 4th showdown against WBC/WBA champion Canelo Alvarez.

The WBC mandates 30 day, 14 day and 7 day weight checks to help ensure that fights don't lose a dangerous amount of weight during fight as they prepare for their official weighin.

The 6' tall Jacobs is the bigger man and will outweigh the 5'8" Canelo on fight night. The question is by how much. The sanctioning bodies haven't instituted a second day weighin for the fight but Canelo's promoter Golden Boy implemented a second day weighin where neither fighter can weigh more than 10 pounds more than the 160 pound middleweight limit. After the weigh in both fighters are free to gain as much weight as they want.

“Weight wise I am great. I am stellar. This whole 7 day weigh in and next day weigh in is not going to affect me. It’s definitely not going to dictate what I am going to come to the ring at. If that is the reason why they implemented it - because the IBF took that rule away once it’s a unification match - Golden Boy implemented it," said Jacobs.

"I am not sure if they look at it as an advantage or what but it was their doing. For me it’s not going to affect me because for my last fight I fought with the same procedures and we were good for the last fight and I look forward to doing the same.”

As for what he will weigh in the ring on Saturday night, Jacobs insists that he doesn't want to rehydrate too much. He wants to come in at a weight where he feels strong and doesn't lose any of his speed.

“I want to come in what I have been at my whole training camp which is about 174, 175. So I want to gain a good 15 pounds. That to me is where I am at my optimum. Anything over that and I am sluggish. That’s with this whole Triple G thing where I came in at 180, 185 pounds. If you see me perform at that level it’s not the best. I am super sluggish and not fast. Especially the way I was moving on my feet. You are not going to get a type of performance out of a guy that’s overweight. It’s not good for your body to gain so much weight after a weigh in like that and perform. You are not going to be at your best. 12-15 for me is perfect,” Jacobs told BoxingScene.com.

i thought there wasnt going to be any 2nd weigh in but i see Golden Boy put one in...no shame Danny...well there's still time for him to keep that same energy from the fast one he tried to pull with the Triple Gawd

A bunch of DAZN ads running on Turner for the NBA playoffs, none of them actually mention the date of the fight. Obviously we know, don't understand not mentioning the date for the casuals.

I don't understand their ads at all...they don't ever talk about when things are going to air, what's on their platform, how to watch, etc. Those first ads they had with Buffer and Canelo were just awful. Like @patscorpio mentioned, their shoulder programming is lacking too. They barely put any effort into it.

I don't get it, they pay tons of money for these guys but they don't shoot any interviews or put any effort into building up fights. Instead you get Ak and Barak interviewing 50 cent, Shawn Porter and Shakur Stevenson :francis:

@R=G is..they might buy last minute or youre not in an area thats like boxing crazy...who knows lol
I went to the spence fight at Regal and it was full (granted it wasnt a large auditorium). I hate Regal though. Thr AMCs showing this are way in the boonies so yeah that could he the case.

Boxing must not do good because rarely does the AMC near me show boxing, I assume they make better money using the auditorium for regular flicks.

This is a very close fight to me.

Jacobs has the size, power, handspeed and athleticism to really trouble Canelo.

But Canelo's defense and counterpunching gives him a big advantage as well as being the better inside fighter.

Jacobs has power, but he punches have a tendency to be very wide/loopy at times. Canelo will have ample opportunities to throw counters, and the body will be there for him. Both guys are excellent body punchers (Canelo is the best body puncher in the game outside of Spence. They're 1A and 1B to me).

I wanna see how much movement Jacobs employs, as he is lighter on his feet than Nelo.

I'm still wondering if Canelo's poor stamina will rear it's ugly head again though :jbhmm:

This is a pick em type fight and Jacobs has a real shot. Looking at the odds right now and Jacobs is a 3 to 1 underdog. Might have to drop some coin just off GP
