Canelo has already faced the best fighters he can at 154 that are aligned with Showtime (Trout, Mayweather, Lara) and their 160 division is weak.
HBO has all the other big time fighters available to him (Pacquiao, Cotto, Chavez Jr, GGG, even Carl Froch and Andre Ward if Canelo wants to go up to 168)

I think Canelo moving to HBO as well does in a sense begin to usher Golden Boy's roster slowly back to HBO as Oscar was hinting at. If you look at Showtime beyond Floyd Mayweather (who only has 2 fights left), who's their flagship fighter?

Plus IMO, HBO is better for him...after taking Lara and Floyd fights.
He needed HBO involvement to get Cotto, which will be a huge fight. Biggest fight sales wise you can make at 154 or 157, whatever they will do.
Canelo also could get lined up with an Andrade fight, Kirkland if he stops playing around and a lot of people think he will move to 160 sometime and GGG is there.
Best move financially and potential fight wise IMO was to go to HBO.
