(1) It matters because a lot of newer rappers get criticized for "not knowing how to rap" because they are off beat...Chuck D is as off beat as Ballout...My question to you is, in the context of his content and impact on the game, why does it matter?
Can Jay-Z make a conscious song? No.... but that doesn't have any impact on his legacy.
Like I said... Chuck D was not the greatest technical rapper. But he more than made up for it elsewhere. Chief Keef doesn't. So your comparison/implications are moot.
These dudes are AVOIDING the question, and they want to talk about "legacy" and blah blah...good question. on some real shyt, chuck wasn't that good of a rapper though. listening to some of his rhymes, he made no sense.
These dudes are AVOIDING the question, and they want to talk about "legacy" and blah blah...
Chuck D's Legacy is carved in marble, I will NEVER dispute that...But is he a good rapper...? How can he be when he is off beat damn near all the time...?
Then why the argument? That's my opinion...
If you think Chuck D can't rap, which you clearly don't, what does anyone gain in trying to convince you otherwise?
(1) Opinions can be based on false information...One should always be ready re-evaluate one's opinion in the light of new information...This is why it is good to have arguments...Then why the argument
Like I said off the rip,
You think a rapper has to be on beat all the time to be considered good... Chuck D isn't.... you are comparing Chuck D, one of the most important rappers of all time, to CHIEF KEEF... what else is there to talk about?
This my favourite Chuck D song, but goddamn, is he off-beat or what...do you think this is good rapping...? If Chuck D can be a good rapper even when he is GROSSLY off-beat, then how do we judge a bad rapper...? How can anyone of us ever say that Silkk The Shocker is a bad rapper...?Lol can't believe this is ongoing, people don't understand rappin, that's the problem, Chuck had a style, if he couldn't rap he wouldn't be able to make so many classic tracks and great songs. If you don't fukk with the style then fair enough but he clearly can rap, infact to an extremely high level. He has some of Hip Hop's greatest songs.
Like I said 2x already, I can't change your opinion. You want an opinion you've arrived at after years of listening to dude's music and forming a perspective of what's "good" or "bad" to be changed by a 100 word post in 2 minutes.... you're not being reasonable at all.(1) Opinions can be based on false information...One should always be ready re-evaluate one's opinion in the light of new information...This is why it is good to have arguments...
It is like sports, yes you spent all time training, but you have to put your philosophy to the test, so others can expose your strengths and weaknesses, and that's how you learn to be better...
You may not change my mind in the heat of the discussion, but if you are intelligent and don't make it personal, you will give me something to think about...This what I was looking for, but all I got were neg raps, and NO REAL defence for Chuck D...Having a legacy and being a pioneer doesn't mean you can rap...
There are a lot of better rappers than Chuck D who don't have Chuck D's legacy and pioneer status...
(2) I am not comparing Chuck D to Chief Keef...I am providing examples that most of us are familiar with...I compared Chuck D on "Can't Truss It" to Prodigy on "GOD Pt 3"...That comparison was avoided like the plague...
(3) Let me ask you this, if a white boy you have never met before stopped you on the street, and started spitting bars with that Chuck D off-beat and awkward rhythm flow, would you think the dude is a good rapper...?
Just be honest with your answer...Many of us wouldn't....I know certain people can tolerate awkward rhythms like Chuck D, Freeway and etc, but many of us can't...
Another thing, You can have an awkward rhythm and still be on beat...A good example is RZA, his rhythm can be awkward at times even when he is on beat, and I can tolerate that...
Just don't be off-beat...
Exactly.... it's like asking why Lil Wayne doesn't rap about conscious shyt... thats not his lane.... and doesnt take away from anything he's done/is doing.you have remember too there's still a line between making records and just rapping. you're talking chuck d people basically know him for the songs not spitting on the street or freestyling n shyt like that. the musicianship aspect is stuck to him and really the old records are the only frame of reference for anyone defending him. its an odd debate all around.
its a matter of preference. even if chuck d and silk the spit the same rhyme, the aesthetic is dufferent because its two different artists expressing in two different waysThis my favourite Chuck D song, but goddamn, is he off-beat or what...do you think this is good rapping...? If Chuck D can be a good rapper even when he is GROSSLY off-beat, then how do we judge a bad rapper...? How can anyone of us ever say that Silkk The Shocker is a
