Were they called the Lady Lakers, Lady Celtics etc?

No, but I don't think that would make much of a difference. The problem with being affiliated with the NBA/men's teams is they don't get the same priority when it comes to resources, when it comes to marketing, operations, arena space etc. For example when you'reMSG Entertainment and you own the Knicks and the Liberty who do you think is getting the bigger marketing budget?:usure: That's where the value in being an independent entity comes in.

No, but there was no cofusion as to who the WNBA team were affiliated with. I know Americans are dumb but calling them the Lady Rockets instead of the Comets wasn't going to make or break the WNBA

I hear you. Probably wouldn't hurt though.

Even now they ain't getting much anyway. I feel from a merchandise standpoint you could sell more gear with the NBA team names. One example I can think of is baby/child clothing. If you're a die hard fan of the Celtics, you ain't buying your daughter the Boston WNBA team (if there is one) gear. But you would he more likely to buy her Lady Celtics gear.

Basically they do it like how the NCAA does it. They have one basketball program or franchise, and they dont try to hide the fact that theyre affiliated with the mens. The womens teams bear the same names as the mens teams.

For example, Womens college basketball is so much more popular than WNBA because of the familiarity. Youre more likely to watch womens march madness because you know all those schools from mens sports, and you might have an affinity or interest for how theyre getting down on the womens side.

If WNBA was like that there would be no "LA Sparks" they would be simply the LA Lakers Womens team or the LA Lady Lakers. Same logo, same colors. If all the WNBA had the same names as their NBA affiliate teams, people would naturally be more interested in watching. I youre a nets fan youre more likely to support the Lady Nets. If WNBA playoffs roll around youre gonna be more interested in watching the Lady Celtics vs the womens 76'ers than you are to watch the sandstorm vs the splash or whatever the fxck. Over here they try to push this fake azz illusion of gender independence and its backfiring in a major way.

Never thought of it like that. I do remember when I started noticing women's club soccer catching on over there I hit up google to see Manchester United's women, who we have and when we play, and we didnt even have a women's team yet at that point :dead:

It's really trivial but yeah I'd be more likely to watch if the branding was consistent like that.

If you're a die hard Celtics fan you're most likely just going to buy your daughter Celtics gear. And if you're NIKE how much are you going to invest to merchandise Lady Celtics gear? Marvel is a huge franchise and they still drop the ball when it comes to merchandising their female properties ex. Black Widow, because they're scared little girls won't buy action figures/toys etc, or that little boys won't want female action figures/toys. It's a lot safer to stick with what companies KNOW will sell. When it comes to women's basketball you can't compete with the men's franchises/history and imo it's a mistake to try and piggy back off of it, have to create your own identity and find your own unique audience. The real question is, is that audience large enough to sustain the sport?

Fair points. But why do you think they do it that way in Europe and Australia?

Soccer is way more popular overseas than basketball is here so I'm sure that's part of it. The Lakers have 19 million followers on instagram, Real Madrid has 120 million.:dahell: The Bulls have 7.4 million. Soccer is a way of life in much of the world, not the same here. Much larger audience and I'm assuming way more female fans to work with.

I get the appeal of trying that model here and I'm not saying it definitely wouldn't work, just think the cons would mute the benefits.

BREAKING: Woj reporting that the Lakers are in talks to trade Russ for Caitlin straight up. Developing story.

History in the making.:banderas:

Commissioner of the WNBA is still on the fence about allowing it because there are concerns about Russ's dresscode being too feminine for their league.

I'll post updates as I receive them.
