did you not watch the final 4 or 5 minutes? Portugal played with heart and were much more aggressive. they were far from "dead".
the U.S. danced around and tried to run the clock. Portugal gave 100% and it paid off for them. total embarrassment for the U.S.. a damn shame too because it would have been one of the greatest wins in U.S. history.

Portugal didn't play with more heart nor with more aggressiveness, they simply HAD to score and therefore were all in because losing meant they were back home. Both teams were on empty because both teams were divided (huge gap between the attack and the defense and no tangible midfield anymore) which is symptomatic because that means the defensive players don't partake in attacks anymore (they can't) and when attacking players don't come back defending (they can't either).
Attacking when leading is a double edge sword. If you do, you need the whole team because you can't attack efficiently (and score) if it's only the attacking line doing it, therefore the US could have been victim of a counter (and Portugal really good at it) if they have played high, that's why they kinda sat relatively deep to avoid taking one like that. Portugal on a counter is a scary sight and the US did what they have to do to avoid that. Nothing to be ashamed of.
