He needs the money. Simple.

You can't compare this to people 60+ who are in the last 20 years of their lives. They're cashing out their lifetime's work and want to enjoy their last years with the big bag.

Bruno Mars is 35.

I wonder why all these artists selling their publishing. You would think his kids kids could eat off his mega hits.
It's simple math. They're likely selling this catalog for a multiple of what they make yearly from it. So if he makes $5 million a year he might sell it for a 30 year multiple of $150 million. Now if you invest $150 million today, you're going to return alot more than $150 million so you make more money by selling out now in the longrun.

When it was Bob Dylan and other legends, the Coli said it made sense because "no one is streaming that music anymore, anyway." Which I disagreed with but fine. Now it's a young artist, who gets heavy streaming/sales, not to mention his music will continue to be in ads/films/etc for years to come...does the Coli still think this is a good idea?

The up front money is nice. Maybe he needed it after a year of being unable to tour. But long term is this a good idea, for a young artist who likely still has multiple hit songs and records in his future? I don't think so.
1. we don't know how much he sold for
2. we don't know what he makes from his current music

Without those two numbers we can't accurately state whether it's a good investment or not. I'd imagine these kinds of things are sold based on yearly multiples of what they make from their catalogue. So if he makes $10 million a year from his royalties and whatnot and sold for 30 year multiple that's $300 million. Now imagine if you invest that $300 million for a conservative 4% yearly return. With compound interest in 30 years that $300 million becomes $700 million.

But again is this what Bruno and these guys are going to do? Who knows. But I imagine they have some really smart lawyers, money managers, etc that are advising them.

For the artists that sold their music last year imagine if they put some of that $100s of millions in stocks and crypto. They could have easily doubled or tripled their money the way both those have ran up the last 8 months.

they could also eat of the up front millions.

streaming revenue is ass even for people this big it would take them a decades to see the same level of returns for their money

as for him he only sold a portion.

Even though he’s a coke head we haven’t really seen Bruno release anything since 24k magic so his money should be straight.

Calvin Harris needs the money?
Timbaland needs the money?
Rza needs the money?
Shakira needs the money?

this isn’t about artists going broke..this is a bigger play

and it sounds like music is become way less valuable to the artist

These artists must know something we don't or they might be getting pressed by these companies to sell off their rights or events start to happen.
Not really, they’re just like everybody else. Once somebody makes a money move and it looks good they want to make it too. Look at how people are throwing all their money into crypto currency now with no knowledge of it

I didn't say Bruno Mars was broke. I said he needed the money. There's a difference. At the least, he's cashed out.

If you have a revenue-generating asset... why would you sell it? (1) The offer is too good to turn down. (2) You could do with the money.

The fact they all seem to keep a % shows it still has value in owning them. But they could relinquish some ownership of it for the big cash.

For older artists, it makes sense to cash-out. Get the cash, enjoy the latter half of your days.

Bruno Mars is the only artist in his peak to have sold his publishing... that means something.

It's like owning a property that you rent out. Why would you sell it or a portion of it? Maybe it's gone up in value so much that you just want to enjoy or reinvest some of that money - this is what most investors do actually.. release equity and enjoy it or use it to fund further ventures.. needing the money.

Basically he's for the most part selling his early shyt. But cashing out seems to be the wave now so, it must be for quite the lumpsome. Perhaps the drip drop of streaming dollars the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
